Very sad to read this - the man was my childhood hero and I shall never forget being roused from my slumbers early in the morning to watch him step onto the Moon live via TV. That remains the single greatest privilege of being born to my generation. No other event comes close.

This is for Neil - RIP:

Statement from the family of Neil A. Armstrong (retrieved via spaceref.com):

Saturday, August 25, 2012

"We are heartbroken to share the news that Neil Armstrong has passed away following complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures.

Neil was our loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.

Neil Armstrong was also a reluctant American hero who always believed he was just doing his job. He served his Nation proudly, as a navy fighter pilot, test pilot, and astronaut. He also found success back home in his native Ohio in business and academia, and became a community leader in Cincinnati.

He remained an advocate of aviation and exploration throughout his life and never lost his boyhood wonder of these pursuits.

As much as Neil cherished his privacy, he always appreciated the expressions of good will from people around the world and from all walks of life.

While we mourn the loss of a very good man, we also celebrate his remarkable life and hope that it serves as an example to young people around the world to work hard to make their dreams come true, to be willing to explore and push the limits, and to selflessly serve a cause greater than themselves.

For those who may ask what they can do to honor Neil, we have a simple request. Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink."

RIP, what a great American. I was not alive when this happened but think of all the things NASA has done since 1972. A man on the moon, and now we have had several explorers on Mars. Cell phones, personal computers. Hell, I was at the store today and they now have charging stations for electric cars. GO Jestsons.

I'm skeptical about this landing. Perhaps NASA should clear up this dilemma once and for all.

However, if it was not true, the Russians could say something (do not forget that the Cold War was then).

Sometimes, when people will look to the moon, it's possible to remember about Neil and his mission.

Rest in Peace Mr. Armstrong.

PS: Please forgive me if I offended anyone with my opinion.

Lol, I think they found a birth certificate on the moon when they landed.

Well, there were several thousand folks - NASA employees, government employees, military, and contractors - involved. 3 people cannot keep a secret. Several thousand? Fuggedaboutit. One of the more important things that the folks who went to the moon did was to set up a mirror on the surface. Scientists on earth can point a laser to it, and measure the time it takes for the reflection to bounce back. That way we can know the precise distance to the moon, amongst other things. I've seen this in action and it's quite cool. There is no question that we have been to the moon. Other info:

And Neil Armstrong is a true pioneer, like Columbus, Cabot, Vespucci and so many others. A friend of mine and his daughter got to meet him personally recently. His daughter is the youngest person to discover a supernova. Because of this they were invited to an astronomy conference on the Canary Islands, and Mr. Armstrong was there in a rare public appearance. It's frustrating that we haven't been back to the moon in over 40 years. The last surviving lunar astronauts are aged 77-82.

I spent last evening showing the moon through one of my telescope to a buddy and his three young children. I made a point of showing them the area where Mr. Armstrong left his famous footprints, and where real history was made. RIP Neil.
