Sammy, my Catholic school education is something I consider an enormous value. Though the nuns were strict and discipline was foremost, the level, quality and dedication that the nuns gave each day were tremendous by today’s standards. These women dedicated their lives to Jesus and took a vow of poverty. They dressed in layers of fabrics even though there wasn’t even a fan never mind an air conditioner in the classroom when it was in the 90s. Every student in every classroom would always act respectfully. Even if one of us got unruly, the other students glared at the culprit. We all wanted to be the best we could. From time to time punishment was implemented but wasn’t as often as you have been led to believe. The punishment was not always corporal. Most of the time it was a written assignment or a reassignment of your classroom seat. If I told my father that my teacher disciplined me I was punished again. I have the utmost respect for these women even though they gave me my deserved licks. In today’s world, nuns care for the poor, the elderly, and the sick. Why would anyone not hold nuns with the highest regard?

I had the soap in mouth thing once because of language. It didnt change on whether or not I thought swearing was ok. Just not to my grandparents. Did that change my behavior? Or did it simply mean it was the first time I segregated people and put them on a list? Maybe it was just an example that I should always show simple courtesy towards others and err on the side of not using it until I knew whether or not that elder was comfortable with it. Parents and grandparents generally are not. Uncles can be a different story and that is one thing I remember.

In any case beyond courtesy or simply being nice, which I show to everybody because thats the kind of person I am, for me respect must be earned. I dont care who it is or how old they are. To be quite rude if someone respects another because of physical harm then he is weak by comparison. Its fear not respect. Also, many fathers like to say never throw the first punch but always throw the last. He doesnt mean the goal is to get the other guy to respect you, but to fear you so it doesnt happen again.

Maybe its just semantics but if anything I learned by example not swats to the ass. If an alcoholic parent for example sees his young kid take a swig and spanks him, or worse, that likely wont change much of anything. The kid likely will have an alcohol problem himself by the time he is a teenager. The same can be said for an abusive husband or parent. The kids often are abusive themselves as adults. Kids can see through the usual 'do what I say not what I do' arguments. Or since they are mentioned here go back to those 50's and 60's with religiously intolerant parents, or various clergy, that forbade something as simple as dancing or listening to rock and roll. Teenagers did it anyways. The parents didnt know about it but when they did the teenagers were called 'rebellious' or 'disrespectful' and various punitive measures would be taken.

Funny thing... I have been told that my mother would swear like a sailor. But she never did around me. Well, maybe a few times when she was agitated at something.

When I was 6 I was horsing around with my younger brother (4) in the hallway of our family's first real house, and he farted.  I exclaimed, "You farted!"  I got to eat half a bar of soap for that.  The soap made my tongue break out into a really painful rash on one side, like it was burned.  After that no one had to actually chew the soap in our house anymore.  Heh.

My dad was mostly into heinous chores for punishment.   My older brother and I got into a fist fight one day and ended up having to go out back and cut down then dig up 8 30' tall poplar trees.  Another time I got caught sneaking out and smoking cigarettes with some friends of mine and my dad gave me the choice of being ground all Summer (it was in June) or painting the outside of the house that weekend (back when houses had siding that you still painted).

I was lucky on the broken bones front.  Broke my nose twice - one time when my little brother than my head into an end table, and another time when I caught a hockey puck in the face.  I have plenty of scars from knives, fishing hooks, bike crashes, and all the other assorted ways boys like to hurt themselves.  Even put a nail through my foot one time.  About the worst trouble I ever got it was when my friend Eric and I made a homemade balista and shot an arrow into a neighborhood house's roof a block away.

We beat each other up with wooden "katanas" that we carved out of trees we cut down with our pocket knives when we were 9.  We got boxing gloves for Christmas one year after Rocky came out and we held boxing tournaments in my friend Eric's back yard every Saturday for all the kids in the neighborhood.  Climbing a tree meant going to the last limb that could hold your weight.  My mom took us out after dark and taught us how to catch night crawlers and we sold them to the local bait shops for a $1 for every 100 we caught.   When we came inside during the summer, our mom would say, "If you need something to do I will give you something to do."  And that meant you went back outside and made yourself scarce.  The TV was always on my dad's shows - and if you didn't like it you did something else.  We always ate dinner at the table as a family until we were all in high school and sports and jobs prevented it, but we still always did on Sunday.  My dad told bad jokes, we cleaned up everything on our plates, and after we went outside unless there was thunder and lightning because being inside meant getting put to work.

I had about the best childhood anyone ever had IMHO.

After you ate the soap and you Farted, did you blow bubbles out of your bumhole532e876dedf15_fartsmiley.gif

Not a sight I would like to see. Nor would I want to see pissing liquid soap. But I suppose that way you could clean the toilet while you use it.

I grew up the same as most of you and i remember the green army men and having the battles in the bedroom with making all the sound effects for my own war. I remember the days of the 1970's and getting under the desk and covering your head for a nuke attack. (

) Here is an educational video for all you old timers.

This post is a walk down memory lane.

Blowing up the little green army men with fire crackers.

Gumby

Monopoly

Doing chores for punishment

playing outside with the neighborhood kids until the street lights came on.

Riding my bike without a helmet to the beach on a Schwinn 5 speed (45 miles one way)

Drive in movies

putting coins on the railroad tracks

making sling shots and shooting out the glass insulators on telephone poles

:popo:

I guess kids during this era did the same types of things just in a different part of the world.

Some how you guys feel like "Kin"  . . . . ."Brothers from another mother" . . . . . .

One time my friend Eric and I made a homemade raft Huck Finn style and floated 10 miles down the river near our house.  Of course we didn't tell our parents anything about it - just that we were going down to the river.  Man that was a long ass walk back.  Found some sweet new fishing holes though, and learned how to swing an ax that day.  One of my favorite memories is making a bobsled trail in Eric's backyard.  We used buckets of water to make a slick ice track with steep banked turns and everything  - had all the kids in the neighborhood using it.  We even carted in snow from neighboring yards to keep it going a couple of weeks after most of the snow had melted.  Of course the sled run ended in the street and you had to crash into the bank on the opposite side (or the curb) to stop....

Wow, Mechano sets, I had a couple of those.  Also had Big Jim and a couple of GI Joe's. One of them had a beard so I shaved him, then drew it back on with pen.

Never blew up my action figures with firecrackers, but I used to shoot them with my pellet gun.  Same with my old car models. Shoot em up then light them on fire.

I do remember pulling out some old shotgun shells outta the pail where Dad stored them.  We took them to the pond and tryed to pry them open. In hindsight, we were damn lucky none of them ever went off.

Pennies on the train tracks all the time and we also walked across the train tressel.  It was about a 1/2 mile long and a 100 feet or so high.  We used to put our ears to the tracks to see if a train was coming. Don't know if that works, but we never encountered a train.

Had a small sledding hill behind my house.  We would slide down the hill, across the alley, then down the middle of the street for 1/2 a block.

It's a miracle that me and none of my friends ever drowned.  And only one of my friends had his eye shot out with a BB gun.  Heh.  That's true.  His older brother did it though, so I consider it a family squabble and not really a normal thing.  Only got picked up by the cops once myself - when I fell into the river fishing in the middle of town by the dam in March one year.  My friends and I lit a fire on a small island in the middle of the river, pretty much under the main street bridge.  Had a neighborhood kid climb so high in a tree once he was afraid to get down and the fire department had to send their big ladder truck to rescue him.  That kid was a tool.

Hell we used to rip Asbestos of roofs in old factory buildings etc and then put it on fires and wait until it exploded, hope that one isn't coming back to bite me in the arse  in the future.
