A few things to note. Laptops run warmer vs. desktops and it's considered normal so don't totally freak out. For example my 780M GTX idles at what most desktop people's higher temps are. Same for CPU. My CPU and GPU aren't considered overheating until 90-100c. Most desktop chips would self destruct at that temp, but mobile things are designed to run a bit warmer. The thermal specs are raised on them, the down fall is they are generally more expensive or slower vs. desktop ver. For example my 780M GTX is probably closer to a 680GTX desktop model performance wise. That said more heat and smaller air space to displace it means heat can build up much faster and is what causes most peoples issues. I personally don't use a laptop cooler, but my laptop has 2 fans (one for CPU and one for GPU) and they run full speed when I game. I also am on a glass desk with room behind it. Room temp is prob 77F Basically I am 780M GTX Overclocked another 100+MHz 4910MQ Overclocked another 1.2GHz on all cores perm. 1TB SSD 32GB Ram Blu-Ray Burner 15.6" High Gamut screen (I play on an external 24" 144Hz screen via DP cable). My GPU and CPU under load both run around mid-upper 70's which is actually really. My PSU is only 180W and I am probably running it at the limit. I disable onboard monitor when gaming to free up some power on it even hah. It really just comes down to the machine you get and the components used. I've played on laptops since before BF3 and no issues but my laptops are 2.5-3k range also. I stopped doing desktops after got tired of power they use, heat the generate and I like the fact I can take my laptop with me and have gaming to go basically hah. What laptop do you have and what temps does it run? You may need to download something to check temps if you don't know. The newer stuff is much better at heat though. For example the i7 CPU's won't really fry on overheating, they will just slow down the clock, same for most the newer GPU's. For example when I get lazy and don't open up mine to clear the vents it gets a tad warmer but instead of overheating it will just get a little slower to compensate for the heat. Most desktops will do this now too with the newer stuff. A cooler will never heart though, adds some cooling, noise and piece of mind for a cheap price. I don't bother as I have 3yr warranty on all my parts and replace it generally after it ends and sell the old machine. I would however suggest cleaning it out every few months. Most have a lower cover that come off and you can blow air from inside that to the outside through the vents to blow the dust bunnies out. Laptop fans generally push more air through smaller spaces so need cleaning of vents a lot more often vs. a desktop would. Anyone with the money I would say get a Sager/Clevo notebook. They generally are close to half the price of AW and better performance. They are not flashy either and more professional/business look. IE less chance to be stolen hah. They also do 3yr warranty for only 150 which on a 3k+ machine is a great deal. My machine is very similar to them as I use a variant of a shell they use. The only game I had trouble to maintain was planetside 2 in ultra high quality. I'm not checking the heat with a sofware or else but it doesn't feel like playing a whole night of BF is an issue. Aeration on the ROGs is pretty good though. Agree with you Mouse, Alienware are awesome but it's clearly overpriced.
