So the toilet overflowed in a half bath this AM and clearly the line leading from the toilet to the stack was plugged. I've never called a repairman for anything; always did my own work. But I didn't want to screw with this. And, we had a problem in another bathroom with odor due to the wax seal failing. Reason for that was because when I tiled the floor, I didn't replace the flange and it was slightly below floor level. So I called the plumber. He had to roto root the line off the one toilet and replace the seals in both. $985 for two hours work. Even my freakin' doctor doesn't make $500 an hour.

Several years ago I had a similar experience...When the plumber quoted me a price to do the work I nearly fainted...I hung up the phone and went to Harbor Freights and bought a power sewer auger for under $300...Stopped by Lowe,s and bought an extra thick wax ring for around $4.00 and did the repairs myself...I will pay a fair wage to have work done but I will not be raped... :) :)

Yupper, use of the power auger which took him maybe 20 minutes, was billed at $450, and I was standing there thinking I could buy the damned thing for less than that and charge people half as much to use it. I didn't know that plumbers now operate like auto repair companies: they consult a book that tells them what to charge for everything. If I need one again, I'll ask him to stop by on his day off and I'll pay him $100 an hour, while I buy any parts.

Yep, plumbers and electricians are just about the highest paid trades. It pays big time to know how to do a lot of that yourself. I replaced my 3 crappers last year as well as new wax rings. It's a good idea to replace those damn rings every few years just to avoid replacing a bathroom sub-floor.

just like in anything there are always companies that charge way to much for services, 985 dollars for 2 hours for rodding a line and replacing 2 wax rings is highway robbery!!!  it should be more like $140-$160 for the 1st hour and $85-$100 for ever hour after, at least that's around what my boss charges. should of not cost more then $300 max!  lot of times since service calls are a "emergency" there never really time to call around for prices, which one should make time to do to make sure you don't get ripped off!  sorry to hear that they did that to you, them thieves give us honest plumbers a bad name!!!

Recently Mrs Bosun and I were half way through a 5400 km trip and hit a kangaroo which rearranged the front of my Ford, and damaged the mounts for the anti-sway bar.  We rumbled noisily into the nearest town of any size and went to the only Ford dealer within 100s of km.   A captive customer, obviously not a local.  I braced myself for a real reaming.

Of course, they didn't have the spare parts we needed.  However they sent the apprentice down to the local wreckers to get a couple of brackets from one of the wrecks down there.  Within an hour the problem had been fixed.  I braced myself for the bill...it was $66.  ($16 for parts and $50 for labor).  So from time to time there are some good experiences.

My gram-pa used to live in Newport TN until he passed away a few years ago. I used to spend some summers there getting in trouble and hiking in the woods . . .good times

if you go to a dealership in the states... you get $100 on your bill for a "convenience charge".  Now THAT is highway robbery.
