I'm just shaking my head at this. The UC system in California receives most of it's funding from the state and feds. Many of the people who attend receive federal student loans. You would think that kids attending college would realize that.

California student group bans American flag from lobby

IRVINE, Calif. — The student government at University of California, Irvine has voted to ban display of the American flag — or any flag — from its lobby.

A resolution that was narrowly approved by the legislative council of the campus' Associated Students calls bans all flags from the common lobby area of student government offices, according to the Orange County Register. It prompted removal of the American flag from a lobby wall.

The student council approved the resolution on a 6-4 vote Thursday, with two abstentions. The executive cabinet was expected to consider a veto on Saturday.

The resolution authored by student Matthew Guevara of the university's social ecology school lists 25 reasons for the ban, saying that the American flag has been flown in times of "colonialism and imperialism" and could symbolize American "exceptionalism and superiority." The resolution says "freedom of speech, in a space that aims to be as inclusive as possible, can be interpreted as hate speech."

The American flag had hung on a wall in the student government suite. A few weeks ago, someone removed the flag and put it on the desk of Reza Zomorrodian, the Associated Students' president, with an anonymous note saying it shouldn't be in the lobby.

The executive members decided to put up the flag again. Then the resolution was brought to the council.

Zomorrodian, an opponent of the ban, said the American flag was "an iconic and symbolic representation of our values in the U.S."

On Friday, state Sen. Janet Nguyen, R-Santa Ana, said she and other legislators may introduce a state constitutional amendment to prohibit "state-funded universities and college campuses from banning the United States flag."

This has nothing to do with the UC system. It has to do with some idiot students who somehow got elected to student government and likely happens all the time. Keep in mind that most students have no interest in student government and those that do tend to be much more political one way or the other. If its not banning the American flag its banning hiphop from co-ed dances. The bottom of the totem pole makes some kind of political or social statement and the next rung up waves their finger and tells them to go sit in the corner like good little children.

Unfortantly there are a lot of nut cases here in CA.  Its sad that they dont realize that flagg and the men that fought for its freedom is what gave them the right to act like idiots.

There are simple solutions.

If one is a citizen and dislikes ones own country's flag, one can seek to emigrate.

If one is a visiting foreign student from overseas and dislikes the host country's flag,

one can STFU or p*ss off to another country that may tolerate the disrespect shown.

I wonder how many of the morons who voted "yea" are law or politics students...

We have a lot of of stupid things like that in Canada. We don't have Christmas any more we have the holiday season many city do not put lights up for fear they might offend a minority group or religion. You may wear headdress into the men's mess now if your religion has  a hat. Forget the fact that the only reason to remove your headdress is for respect to the fallen. On and on it goes sad. When I was a kid so many moons ago my city park was devastated by dutch elm desease. To compensate the people that built a 50 thousand dollar play ground for everybody were talking the 70's here. It was awesome. Thing is it was built out of pressure treated lumber. Somebody piped up and said there was arsenic in the chemical used to treat the wood. Did not matter that some stupid kid would have to suck a ton of the lumber to get ill . A community was formed a lawyer was pecured and the city had to tear it down. So over budget because the city need a layer and had to pay to remove the play ground we ended up with nothing. This is why I like my pets more then most people :)

P.S. my cats are smarter then some people too. Never seen any of them lick the deck outside LOL

WTF is wrong with those people??!! Disrespecting your national flag is a disrespect to the country you are from and to those who have dedicated their lives to preserve what that flag represents. Where is this new generations commitment and dedication to the country they live in.  No respect what so ever!

This seems rediculous. You get a small collection of malcontent students who are most likely pissed off about everything and wanting just another cause. Dont they have better things to do or did thier class on basketweaving 101 fill up to quick.

Pete it is becoming the culture or it is the culture. The 60's are coming back... free thinking and government hate. This time all by design.

Look at the middle east. Come the fuck on. :)

Yes it is all related.
