Man.... White people. Now I know were we get it.

I am part Dutch and German.. I can say this.

I've always been puzzled as to why Americans describe themselves as Irish-Americans, German-Americans, Swedish-Americans etc.

After all, you are citizens of the United States, "one nation, indivisible", are you not?

I understand that some cities have distinct cultural heritages - Boston (Irish), New York (many) - but when will the time come when a sense

of national identity replaces these genealogical markers?

I have never considered myself, in any way, Danish, Dutch or German, despite over a third of my genes being Anglo-Saxon.  I have

a "Celtic" skin type (so a consultant dermatologist has stated) so there's a bit of Ancient Briton in there somewhere perhaps!  We are true

mongrels in these isles.

Don't mistake pride in our ancestry as a lack of national pride. We have both and are passionate about them. With the exception of African-Americans, very few of us hyphenate our identities. We're Americans first and foremost.

My ancestry is Irish, English and Welsh, but that all takes a back seat to being an American.  I identify most strongly with my Irish heritage because my grandmother and great grandmother both came here from Ireland and I grew up knowing both of them very well. One of my grandfathers was a direct descendent of a Mayflower passenger, so there is a lot of pride knowing that I have a bit of the first Europeans to arrive in North America in my history as well.

If you go to Germany.. are they a bit different than Irish are.. right? How about the Welsh and the Dutch.. are they a bit different? What about folks from the North part of England and folks from the south England.. are they a bit different?

Yes they are.. culture. Culture like a working dog is taught over time. How did a blue healer become a blue healer. The bread of dog.. its abilities and training it got by the handlers.. or the culture then dogs ancestors grew up in for decades.

Why don't we just call all dogs dogs and not identify their breads any more. Dog what kind of dog do I have.. a dog.  But what kind.. just a dog. That wont work will it?

I have 5 breads in me and I understand them all. I have things I do that stereotypical is German and many Germans are dyslexic. I can be a bit anal at times as well. My Welsh, Scottish and American Indian side gave me ADD like my dad has.

Because talking about dogs breads are no different that talking about human breads. We are all the same but we are different.

Don't you every say I am from New York City... I will be offended. This is a big ass country and them Yankees are just that. Yankees. I am a Texican and German Dutch mix form Kentucky.

For now on you are German since you are so close to them. :)
