The problem with that is, the cut backs in our armed services budget has seen our forces cut from 200k Army, 200k Navy (including Royal Marines) and 150k Airforce totalling around 550k in the 60s and 70s, where now it is 140k active army and 40k reserves ready to give us 180k personnel ready to go. Secondly they're in some godforsaken country fighting for control of resources or establishment of a puppet government, which does what the main invading government asks. Sonovabich 1 Awards

When you aim at the 1,000yd target (we use an old man hole cover/ sewer lid - heavy thick cast iron about 2"thick and 30" dia.) you have to aim approximately 16' high using a .308 rifle. If your standing behind the shooter you can see the bullet fly thru the air in an arc and then you hear a "Ding" if your on the mark. Your probably wondering how you can see a bullet traveling over 1,000 feet per second . . . . .it leaves smoke trail. Very cool codpiece and little_old_man 2 Awards

Your probably wondering how you can see a bullet traveling over 1,000 feet per second . . . . .it leaves smoke trail. Very cool Found this on a sniper chat board. Bullet trace is caused by the bullet disturbing the air and simply causing light to distort in that spot, much like how heat rising from the ground causes a shimmering effect. Vapor trail is something else entirely and extremely rare as far as I know, as the weather conditions have to be very much just right, not to mention the background has to be dark enough to see the trail. The vapor trail is caused by a drop in pressure behind the bullet which causes water in the air to condense momentarily, similar to those little white streaks at the tip of a jet's wing. To view bullet trace, you simply need to have the right combination of environmental factors and be generally behind the shooter. It can be seen with the eye, supposedly, but usually it takes some good optics looking downrange to catch a glimpse of it. To view vapor trail, you also need the right combination of environmental factors (even moreso!), but you can be positioned anywhere to see it, as the white mist is easily visible from any angle even by the naked eye. Here's what it looks like. Edited November 7, 2016 by little_old_man Leadfinger, bds1961 and maverick 3 Awards

Honestly I didn't know the right term and calling it a smoke trail was weak and furthermore you don't actually see the bullet you see the disturbance as the video shows. I stand corrected and schooled . . .I guess I better take a bit more time when I post Thanks for the video @@little_old_man and your time for researching . . . . . . . what I should have done before I posted some cool physics going on there Awards

Cold crisp morning shoots are the best for seeing them. And as anyone who has ever shot the 45 acp knows you can actually see the bullet traveling down range. Last time that I had checked the world record for a 1000yard shoot was 5 shots in a 3/4 inch group with a 300 Winchester magnum. ( my best was 3 inches). These guys that do these long kill shots use large heavy projectiles that carry a lot of energy down range. Being such even with a muzzle break the initial recoil is tremendous. Being able to control all aspects of your body including your heartbeat ( yes it shows up down range ) to steady the rifle and knowing you are going to get the shit knocked out of you when you squeeze the trigger takes a lot of self control. It is always funny when I would let some one try one of my long range competive pistols. First shot dead center almost every time, the rest all over the place since they are afraid of the blast and recoil. Leadfinger, loaderXI, little_old_man and 1 other 4 Awards
