Alright, gotta quick question for ya'll who have had some back issues, bout two days ago I went to sleep and was good, but woke up and could barely move, when I stood up my back spasmed so hard and painful that I fell straight to the floor, and it was something painful, I've been shot before and it didn't hurt that bad, well went to the old trick of using a heating pad for 30 mins then ice pack, and repeat for bout two hours and it felt better, since it was feeling better, I had to take my mother in law on a few errands for her and came home everything was fine, went to sleep with the heating pad on low and woke up bout 2 a.m. and couldn't move, I had to roll off the couch (Sleeping on the couch with my legs up usually fixes my back problems) and crawl down the hall, because I couldn't move, now I can walk a little bit but very slowly and no jerking movements or my back spasms so bad I almost fall down again, again any help would be appreciated.

Get thee to your doctor ASAP. As a long sufferer of back pain (herniated disc in lower back and compression fracture in upper back) it could be several things but in any event, nerve damage could result from delayed medical treatment (as happened to me.)

No more heating pad ice it only lie on your back and bend your knees till they form a little tent and stay there. Sleep with a pillow between your knees . And once again no more heating pad.

in the meantime, until you can swing the dough for the doc...try taking some ibuprofen before you got to bed. I dont advocate the use of any pills except ibuprofen. I had been a brick/block mason for 10 years and have had my share of back pain. Other than surgery or serious mind altering pain medication, i have found that this probably worked better ( at least so i could function somewhat normally...is that possible?)Good luck and lay up and rest if you can for now.

If you feel like you need a Doc to look at u dont go to the ER, find a doc that knows about back pains,if you dont have a family doc find one a friend uses and make an appointment and let them know you have no insurance, most the time you see the cost will be much smaller then a ER visit. Just last year i got a small metal sliver in me eye and found a eye doc and made an appointment, had to wait 2 hours, but he pull the piece of metal out and charged me $95.00, with a 2nd visit to make sure all was good, the doc told me if i went to ER it would of cost around $600 or more.

hope you get feeling better, ive had my back problems and they no fun

As a current back problem patient, Last year had a MRI (3rd one so far) leg nerve conductive study followed by several xrays and then physical theropy........     The first thing the doc told me since i have several buldging discs along with some tearing as well as nerves being piched   Ice will not do any thing for it.  Ice and the heating is used when you have a muscle pull or strain. Heating pad alone is what they suggest.    After the 3rd visit to the physical theropy they tried to realign my hips----------

2 days later i was in moderate pain for 2 days but after that i was ok. Next visit apon telling themm of my discomfort with the realigning the decided to traction.   Well i can tell you they will never try that on me again........ Again 2 days later i started to get pain------ but by mid day Saturday i could hardly stand up without alot of pain and help. By Sunday I could no longer walk and struggled to keep the pain under control...(My doctors say that since i have a very high tolerence to pain, I will unlikly go into the ER to get looked at)   My wife by now is getting a bit worried and tells me to get to the ER now.

I calm here down and by Monday morning I head to the VA ER and was given a steriod shot along with pain meds (which i refuse to take-------- I hate pain meds--) So i get a Week off from work and take ibuprofen to keep the inflmation down.

So from the sound of how you are describing it------ It sounds as though you have a disc compressing on a nerve.. But the spasm's also sound as it could be a very bad muscle strain (which is also very painful) with that rest and ibuprofen will start to help you there as well as after try to start some light back exercises to protect against future problems....

Are you getting pain shotting down your leg also?  If not then you are probably with a disc issue only......   Bad thing is no matter how you slice it   the Docs is the only solution....   They do give you some exercises to do so as to strengthen the muscles around the back area........

Damn Grey, you're all bent out of shape - just like me (also nerve conductivity tests, physical therapy, etc. and etc.; been there, done that.) At some point - and I'm delaying as long as I can, I'll go in for the fusion surgery.

I'm not supposted to lift anything over 40 lbs. Of course, I completely ignore that because I am damn sure NOT ready to throw in the towel. And when I ignore it, and I'm in pain, what really helps me is one of those vibrating heat mats that runs from you neck to your arse, in a recliner. The heat and vibration combo, along with nightly hot bathtub soaks, usually get me back within a few days.

Like everyone else has said visit your Doc. BUT DO NOT USE HEAT my physio explained with muscle strain / damage heat can cause it to inflame even more, Ice increases the blood flow to the affected area and aids healing. And as painful as it is try to keep mobile if you make the mistake of not keeping up some sort of movement you could seize up and then re-strain when you do.

With regards the ice get a disposable plastic cup fill with water and freeze. Then take the large ice block out and get your good lady to use it to massage the affected area in a circular motion (but please wrap the ice in a thin cloth otherwise you can burn the skin with direct contact)

I hope this helps mate get well soon.

Well, since everyone's giving conflicting advice and I know absolutely nothing about what you're going through, here's my hay penny's worth:

Cut everything off from the neck down.  I'm sure that will alleviate some pain. /sarcasm Tongue out
