I use on board sound , with a head set , would there be any advantage in getting a sound card, It just for gaming..

I've been looking at the Asus Xonar Dx, what do you think, any better then on board sound.

Or do you have some good suggestions for me, price is always a consideration.

You will notice a big difference with a dedicated sound card vs. on board sound. You'll here things that you never heard before, like foot steps even from people with silent perk and your sound will be more directional enabling you to her from which direction people are coming.Once you get a good sound card you'll never go back to on board sound.

Don't know about the Asus cards,I have a Creative X-FI Titanium and have had no problems with drivers, sound is exceptional.HT-Omega makes some good sound cards without the bloated drivers.

There is no need for a soundcard, i have onboard sound, and can hear foot steps even from people with silent perk and your sound will be more directional enabling you to her from which direction people are coming. It just has to do something with a good headset, if you have a 5.1 or more, you need a onboard sound with this, that will be the only thing to by a headset, if you bord don´t ahve this ;-)

Creatives X-FI CMSS-3D feature will enable any good headset to have 3D surround sound and their top of the line card the HD will emulate 5.1.Although some on board sound may have this feature, there are way more settings and adjustments with a sound card that makes the sound way better.

Realtek's on board sound 889 and above are pretty good but doesn't compare to a dedicated card IMO.

I use the MB sound and use 5.1 headphones and it sounds great, as good as the sound blaster i ripped out.

But if you going for a BIG sound for music and movies with a real sound sys, then you might want a card.

A dedicated sound card also takes some pressure off your CPU and sends it to the sound card hardware, a minute amount but some none the less. (That's my-NOOT.....meaning very small, not the time).

You also get bragging rights and a night on the couch if your married.

I thought usb headsets used their own sound card;

"Logitech’s G35 Surround Sound Headset is jam-packed with features including Dolby surround sound; user-definable profiles; a spring-steel headband; and a USB interface that keeps the audio signal in the digital domain until it reaches the headphones. By performing the digital-to-analog conversion in the headphones, Logitech eliminates any chance that the audio will be polluted by electrical noise radiating inside the computer.

The downside to this approach is that also bypasses any investment you might have made in a high-quality sound card."

depends on how old your motherboard is, my board has 5.1 onboard and works great with 5.1 speakers!   i only use a headset for the mic not sound, and dont have a 5.1 or better headset, so onboard is all i need.  You would be better off to upgrade anything else than to waste 100 bucks on a soundcard.  Trust me i looked at sound cards for a long time and every single one I have had an eye on was way overpriced, didnt work right somehow, or just a piece of crap from the start.  What cpu and mobo are you running?  Oh and what gpu and how many are you running? The card in the vid above by wizid is only stereo not 5.1 or 7.1 and costs 200 bucks.  You could get a gtx 470 or a new cpu for that price.  With all this being said I am half fucking deaf from real live fire so just not as important to me

No.. I did back in the day, but the higher end MoBo's build with such decent on-board that it just isn't needed if you are just wanting good gaming sound. I suppose HiFi music lovers, music server builders, or anyone using a rig for surround sound movies..etc would have a use for them.

My mobo has SupremeFX X-FI built in. I know it doesn't compare to what you get with a good dedi card, but it has been great for gaming environment so far. I suppose I should try out a card and see if there is any significant difference... you got me thinking about it anyway. I'm gonna google a bit and see if there are any decent reviews on on-board vs dedi card for gaming. I'll let ya know what I find.

IF you are interested, here is a guy selling his XT unit with a 7.1 expansion card. Looks like a good deal. I saw this a couple weeks ago when researching my new build. The RagingCain dude seems pretty solid.

Good GRIEF!!!! I had no idea that 'on-board sound versus dedicated sound card' was such a debated topic on the interwebs. You could spend the rest of your life reading that drivel. So far though, from what I can gather, it is as I suspected. Although you will find a full spectrum of pro and con, when you read between the lines you find that most gamers that USED to run dedicated cards find there are no longer appreciable benefits in using them, considering the new advanced integrated sound on higher end mobo's.

Yes, your music can sound better. Yes, you can use a ton and a half more features to tweak each and every Khz band you like.. but for GAMING it just isn't necessary.

All in all, the more you read.. the more I would have to be honest and say 'It's up to individual opinion'. This isn't an area that can be really tested or benchmarked, it's up to the individuals taste. I'm probably not ever going to buy a new dedicated sound card, but if I find a really good deal on a good used one I might pick it up and try it out just to form my OWN opinion.

3 posts in a row.. can anyone say 'bored' today?!?

we get less interferences with onboard sound cards these days, but it still bad compared to a good pci card or even some firewire external cards. but yea those can cost a lot. u get way better capaciters better amplifyers, less latency,...

but for gaming only ? i think it may be a bit too much.

u may want to invest up to 200, not more or u will use the card for something else than just gaming

That soundcard that LARSIN pointed too can be found for really cheap, especially if your reseller offers pricematching...

The nicething about that Asus soundcard is that it has built-in AMPLIFIER...

don't get me wrong, the old days of "you NEED a sound card to offload CPU cycles" are over, but I find that my onboard chips is decent but doesn't drive the headphones loud enough...

The zonar Dx can be found for as cheap as $25...I might grab one...

Any one using a usb headset is using the headsets built in sound card, bypassing the on board or dedicated card if installed.

For me my onboard sound is Realtek ALC888 and a dedicated sound card is way better. If your mother board is fairly new then your on board sound is probably good enough,(ALC889 and above).
