I've been looking at the Asus Xonar Dx, what do you think, any better then on board sound. Or do you have some good suggestions for me, price is always a consideration. Don't know about the Asus cards,I have a Creative X-FI Titanium and have had no problems with drivers,sound is exceptional.HT-Omega makes some good sound cards without the bloated drivers. You would be better off to upgrade anything else than to waste 100 bucks on a soundcard. Trust me i looked at sound cards for a long time and every single one I have had an eye on was way overpriced, didnt work right somehow, or just a piece of crap from the start. What cpu and mobo are you running? Oh and what gpu and how many are you running? The card in the vid above by wizid is only stereo not 5.1 or 7.1 and costs 200 bucks. You could get a gtx 470 or a new cpu for that price. I did back in the day, but the higher end MoBo's build with such decent on-board that it just isn't needed if you are just wanting good gaming sound. I suppose HiFi music lovers, music server builders, or anyone using a rig for surround sound movies..etc would have a use for them. My mobo has SupremeFX X-FI built in. I know it doesn't compare to what you get with a good dedi card, but it has been great for gaming environment so far. I suppose I should try out a card and see if there is any significant difference... you got me thinking about it anyway. I had no idea that 'on-board sound versus dedicated sound card' was such a debated topic on the interwebs. You could spend the rest of your life reading that drivel. So far though, from what I can gather, it is as I suspected. Although you will find a full spectrum of pro and con, when you read between the lines you find that most gamers that USED to run dedicated cards find there are no longer appreciable benefits in using them, considering the new advanced integrated sound on higher end mobo's. Yes, your music can sound better. Yes, you can use a ton and a half more features to tweak each and every Khz band you like.. but for GAMING it just isn't necessary. All in all, the more you read.. the more I would have to be honest and say 'It's up to individual opinion'. This isn't an area that can be really tested or benchmarked, it's up to the individuals taste. I'm probably not ever going to buy a new dedicated sound card, but if I find a really good deal on a good used one I might pick it up and try it out just to form my OWN opinion. 3 posts in a row.. can anyone say 'bored' today?!? The nicething about that Asus soundcard is that it has built-in AMPLIFIER... don't get me wrong, the old days of "you NEED a sound card to offload CPU cycles" are over, but I find that my onboard chips is decent but doesn't drive the headphones loud enough... For me my onboard sound is Realtek ALC888 and a dedicated sound card is way better.If your mother board is fairly new then your on board sound is probably good enough,(ALC889 and above).
