God has been gracious to us!  Since the birth of our 6 year old daughter my wife has miscarried 10 times.  Each one carries its own grief and the seemingly never-ending bouts of depression.  We eventually came to the conclusion that we could no longer have children and were looking forward to having all the kids in school this year.

Then she said those dreaded words to me again:  "I'm pregnant."  It's not that I don't get excited about another ankle-biter in the house.  I just didn't want to go through another cycle of depression and nursing my wife back into emotional stability.  The doctor gave us two choices:  1) put Sabrina on hormone injections every three days or 2) ride it out and see what happens.  We chose the latter.  Some people said we were choosing to kill our baby if Sabrina didn't get the progesterone shots.  However, our view was that our God is mighty beyond all human comprehension.  If He wanted us to have this baby, then He is able to see that dream to fruition.

Throughout the pregnancy neither my wife or I wanted to get too excited about the real possibility of this baby's birth.  It was almost as if we were waiting for the other shoe to drop...  So many times before she had miscarried.  Even when we made it through the first trimester it still didn't put our minds at ease.  And yet, this baby kept on trucking.

The last three weeks have been miserable for Sabrina.  At 36 weeks she began having regular contractions, sometimes 5-6 minutes apart and usually starting in the afternoons and lasting well into the night.  At that point, that Saturday,  we decided to take the doctors advice and pre-register at the hospital and have a tour of it before the baby was born.  Sabrina mentioned the contractions to one of the nurses, which turned into an overnight stay, trying to stop pre-term labor.  But the contractions would continue.  The following Wednesday, as we were preparing dinner, the contractions became 5 minutes apart and Sabrina said she felt awfully sloppy down there, as if the baby could fall out.  So, back to the hospital we went, only to return home a couple hours later because the contractions back off to half hour intervals.

The next two weeks we were more prepared.  We changed our mindset - baby wasn't coming until April (her due date was March 28th) and Sabrina would just be mostly miserable until then.  I had an MSHA recertification meeting that I needed to attend on Friday.  Work had already rescheduled it once in case Sabrina went into labor, but I told them I would bug out of the meeting if she called to say she was in labor.  We made it through the meeting without incident.  Sabrina talked to a friend (and midwife) who suggested a concoction of castor oil to kick start her into labor (since she was past 38 weeks now).  The midwife said it would take a minimum of 3 hours before anything would happen and would result in one of two results:  diarrhea and labor, or just diarrhea.  Sabrina said she's never felt so cleaned out before!

Then late Saturday night her contractions kicked up a notch... or three.  They came 15 minutes apart, but much stronger than before.  She was tired enough to sleep in between them before calling the hospital nurse and deciding to come in in the morning.  I, of course, slept wonderfully through the night with no clue of what had transpired until she woke me at 7 a.m. to tell me we need to head to the hospital.

Naturally, our OB doctor was out of town, but God was good.  The on-call doctor received most of his training in Mexico, where there were no high tech baby monitoring equipment.  He said himself, "I'm the closest thing to a midwife you'll find in this hospital."  And he was just our style.  By 9 a.m. the contractions hadn't intensified, so he gave us the option to break the bag of waters... and we took it!  Sabrina was more than ready to have her body back and I wanted to finally see the kid.  He broke the water at 9:06 a.m. and wanted her contractions monitored for half an hour and then we walked, not for very long though.  The contractions intensified and then those glorious words were whispered:  "I think I need to push!"  Quickly she was put back into bed and the doctor was called back into the room.  A short labor and at 10:56 a.m. Gianna Marie was born!  Perfectly healthy at 6 lbs 12 oz, a lot lighter than our other babies (all over 8 lbs).

We had picked her name months before, Marie after Sabrina's brother's wife (a Swede), and Gianna meaning "God is gracious."  And gracious He was... Gianna was born with the umbilical cord around her neck (not unusual) and a loose knot in the cord.  Had that knot tightened up during the pregnancy would be burying a child today.  But God IS gracious and good.

Gianna Marie
Born March 20, 2011 at 10:56 a.m.

Congratulations, WOW. I am crying now, I watched on the news this morning just 10 mins. before I read this, about A four year old boy that almost died and said he was in heaven...long story short he described what everyone was doing and where they were at in the hospital at the time,and.....he said he had seen his sister there and that she was hugging him.....the thing was..... his mom had miscarried her and he knew nothing about her. I believe you have something xtra special waiting for you in Heaven also my friend.

The book is called "HEAVEN IS FOR REAL" it just came out. Your right, GOD is gracious---Gianna...I won't forget that.

Talking about waking up and having a day of revelation! Thanks for sharing Marty.
