O. A. T. = Break Out Another Thousand. BTW, gas here in PA at a boat dock is a nudge over $5.00. Very happy my first tank was "free". I know, I know, the cost was hidden somewhere in the deal. He did give me a $50.00 Wakeboard rope because he could not figure out how to enter the sale in their new computer system. As with many things, owners and bosses do not know the details in operating the business.

The engine in our boat is a 2.2 litre inboard Nanni diesel. Until quite recently, all fuel we bought for it (red diesel - stained to identify it as such so it could not be used for road vehicles) was tax-free so considerably cheaper than road fuel. However, the EU would not renew the exemption for marine craft on inland waterways so in came taxation. However, the fuel we don't use for propulsion but to generate electricity on-board isn't taxable. This means we have to make a fuel declaration every time we fill up and the fuel-seller then calculates what we owe. The usual ratio is 60% propulsion, 40% generation. Some sellers break the law by saying they won't sell fuel other than at that ratio whilst most allow you to specify in units of 10%. It's useful when you don't do many miles in a day but keep the engine running to charge the batteries. I guess we burn about a litre per hour so two US gallons or so per day or up to four on a long summer day. Awards
