so went to work this morning and the foreman removed the utility box covers (don't ask i don't know why) then he sends me over next to one to work,(I shoulda known better than to be around this thing) someone asked me a question, i stood up turned to answer them and put the prybar right into the utility box....BOOM. it sodered the prybar to the box but didnt get me except some singed hair. my foreman thought he killed me. im ok, just a lil shaken up about it. i was holding the prybar, why wouldn't the current bite me? if someone can answer this please do. its bugging me. :(

OMG, so glad you are ok!!!!! Do you guys have a lockout/tagout program? At our place (chemical plant) everything has to be de-energized and locked out before work can begin. Once again, so glad you are ok!!!!

Sounds like you weren't properly grounded...... (good thing). If you were you would have been zapped to death. Shoes or what you were standing on must have isolated or insolated you making the current find another less resistant path to travel. Could have been what saved you. If you were hanging on something grounded then that happened.. you may have faced a different fate.

Glad your ok.... that sounds a bit scary. Some of the work I have done I have come so close. Guess why I don't take everything so serious. I should have dies many times in my life.

Lucky you! I agree, you were not properly grounded. Your shoes probably saved your life. Had your body been a direct path to earth ground from the pry bar you were holding it would have passed directly through your heart seizing the muscle. It only takes 200-300mA to kill a human being. That would have been much, much higher. You are indeed lucky, my friend. You'd better start going to church!!! =)

You are very lucky Dayton. Did the other end of the bar contact the case of the box when the event happened (one end on the power, the other end on the case) ? That might explain the path the current took. If not, then you were just damn lucky that the tip of the prybar shorted out against both ground and power, which is why it welded. If the bar only contacted the power, and you were holding it.. depending on the voltage supply.. you would have been toast regardless of what kind of shoes you were wearing. You were isolated from ground, and a very lucky man.

Thank the Lord you are OK! :o

If you work around high voltage, surely there are procedures to keep you safe?

Over here, such an incident would require filing a report to the Health & Safety Executive;

is this being reported to OSHA?

thanks guys. :) my buddy from the jobsite called. i guess when the d.p.l (dayton power& light) showed up they saw the prybar and asked how bad was i hurt? foreman said "he's fine just went home for the day, shook up". they said they don't know how thats possible that i should be 100% dead right now. but yeah i attend church almost every week and say prayer everynight. guess it works.:) thinking about it i think your right bama i think the prybar touched the current but the otherside (that got welded) is were it traveled to (obviously) not me. i won everything today. :)
