Try right-clicking the shortcut or the exe and "run as administrator" -- Does that work?

Also make sure that both the game and punkbuster are allowed connections through the windows firewall.

hi folks,

i have tried to run in every compatability mode they have even running as an admin. i have all windows security features turned off as that is one of the first things i do after i install. i hate the microsoft paranoia, i turn off all their stuff. i have aftermarket features running.. now here is the killer., the single player version of cod4 will play like gangbusters. the MP version starts but in the middle of startup i get a flag saying it stopped running. i tried to load crysis warhead and it is a sp version and it does the same thing. is there some other windows security feature that is hidden that might be causing this ?

thanks,

Katana

i doubt it as i run all windows default settings i ve never had any issues...as long as i have my mic pluggd in i can load cod4..just make sure ur compatibiliy mode is uncheckd and off then try to run game in safe mode to see if it loads that way...make sure all ur drivers are up to date and installed..what sound card do you have? as the iwd3mp.exe failed error usually is sound issue...

Reinstall direct X and run in 10 not 11 in your config_mp... cod4 wont handle 11...it barely handles 10.

Open DirectX Diagnostic Tool by clicking the Start button , typing dxdiag in the Search box, and then pressing ENTER.

Here are some of the things you should be looking for:

Lack of hardware acceleration. Some programs run very slowly or not at all unless Microsoft DirectDraw or Direct3D hardware acceleration is available. Click the Display tab, and then under DirectX Features, check to see whether DirectDraw, Direct3D, or AGP Texture acceleration is marked Not Available. If so, you might consider upgrading your hardware. You might also need to turn on graphics acceleration.

To turn on graphics acceleration

Open Display Settings by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, clicking Personalization, and then clicking Display Settings.

Click Display Settings, and then click Advanced Settings.

Click the Troubleshoot tab, and then click Change Settings. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Move the Hardware Acceleration slider to Full.

Devices are not connected. If a joystick or other input device fails to respond, it may not be properly set up. Make sure the device is present on the Input tab of DirectX Diagnostic Tool. If not, reinstall the game controller or input device by unplugging it and then plugging it back in.

Unsigned drivers are present. Microsoft has not tested unsigned drivers for full compatibility with the latest version of DirectX. We recommend that you use drivers that are digitally signed by Microsoft Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL).

Found a few....try these if you want...

Hi.

I've seen this work on a few occasion so try this:

Go into the main COD4 folder, then open the 'Miles' folder.

Find 'mssmp3.asi' and rename it to 'mssmp3.bak'.

Then try running it.

Thanks. Would you believe that Activision's Customer Support actually told me to "Try plugging something (headphone or microphone plug) in your MICROPHONE jack on the front of your computer. If there is no plug on the front, use the one on the back." And that's a quoted!

Katana uninstall game, then update sound drivers then reinstall game back to the new drivers, it's the only fix that has ever worked for me.

are you positive you have windows firewall turned off?

if running your own preference firewall, look in it and make sure that you have not accidentally locked them out. Sometimes windows 7 will forget to ask your permission to allow or block something, and it will just block on it's own.

which mic plug are you using, you said you have it plugged in, maybe try the other one. If using USB mic, it probably won't make a difference, but if it's the little audio jack, try front and back.

hey folks,

thank you all for all your help. the problem has been attributed to many smaller issues , but the main issue was how and what way compatibility mode was used. finally i was able to get the iw3mp.exe to stop crashing by setting the shortcut up to load the game as an admin. and to use windows vista sp2 mode. after that the game loaded without crashing.

since then i have been trying to work out conn. speeds and to get my either net card to behave properly. the game is now running and at between 110 to 125 fps and a 70 ping. my intermittant ci problem was a coaxial cable that had loosened up during the computer setup and moving things around. downloads are still slow but will be workedout as i go.

thank you all for the input and help,

levern

p.s. i intend to make a post in the computer section to tell you all what was used in the build of my new machine.
