Just curious, had avg 2011 installed. It failed to update virus definitions yesterday, and failed with a manual update.

error code 0xC0070643. Refused to uninstall itself, refused to update to 2013, and had me a little concerned.

I downloaded an uninstaller and removed some of it, but not everything. Shit, now I couldn't re-install or repair my anti-virus. Finally found a site within AVG that had specific uninstaller files, and that got rid of everything.

Downloaded 2013 as a stand alone (by this time had unhooked my computer from the network) and installed it from a thumbdrive. Working fine now, anybody else notice anything amiss?

:ouch:

AVG used to be a good one, but I started having issues like you are saying a couple years ago, and gave up on it when Microsoft Security Essentials came out.

Have had zero issues with MSE and been using it since the first month official release of it.

people people people tsk tsk comes pre installed on Win 8 I wonder why

Gotta agree with Labob on this one.

I've used some of the leading AV solutions in paid and free editions. The industry will say AV Program A is the best this year, then AV Program B is best the next. So I guess we're supposed to hop on that merry-go-'round if we want to be protected to the ultimate level, right?. Well, then along can Security Essentials. Free and provided my Microsoft. I don't know about you, but as an MCSD, I'm well aware that documentation on all the hooks into Windows are not public knowledge. The only conclusion is that there is only one source that is uniquely positioned, and with full knowledge of how best to protect a Windows system. That's Microsoft. And did you get the part about how MSSE is FREE? The Antivirus merry-go-'round came to a grinding halt for me at that point. Oh, and BONUS - it's about the fastest, most resource friendly AV program out there. And oh yeah, did I mention it's FREE?

Go get you some.

;)

i do repair some computers for family and friends, and i must say no free anti virus will get you safe.

the problem is mainly the user, because there are some people that dont run any antiviruses and got zero problems.

but yea AVG sucks, avast im not sure at all, avira isnt great at all either, and MSE isnt perfect, in fact i had one of these computer that none of these anti-viruses could get rid of the problems.

but i usually told em to get MSE because its seems to be the best free option.

For my part i run NOD32 on my machines for like 5 years now. and i wonder how, but im the only one around that got zero viruses problem.

and for the malwares and crapwares and all shit, spybot search and destroy, malwarebytes, CCleaner and i also got Combofix that i was recommended, but i never used it yet (but worth a try when u are infected)

soooooo microsoft isn't perfect either .I know that they ( the ANTI VIRUS PEEPS ) make the virus's so the can get $$$$$ that's y any FREE crap don't work . but that's the way they get us to buy their software . then each anti virus company has to figure each others virus big circle of games for them $$$$ , sure there's the other jerks that put virus's on our computers but i think it's mostly the anit virus people doing it just mt thought . all about $$$$$ making employment .

If you want an impartial view (though it'll always be a snapshot as threats change), refer to Virus Bulletin:

http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archive/test?recent=1

You can save yourselves a lot of potential pain by ensuring you do not have Java installed on your computer -

that remains the most common vector for infection. (Note Java and Javascript are not the same thing!)

Keep an eye on current threats and maintain your OS and browser.

I use an AV program with an active linkscanner so I don't stumble into a malware-infected site unaware.

Malwarebytes is a good belt-and-braces program to detect anything your memory-resident shield might have missed.

Had them all...been using WSE for the last three years...never had any trouble...plus the fact that i don't go to those sketchy sites . I believe it boils down to just being carefull what you do,remember though anything for free is just that,,,,,, free
