My father has epilepsy.....a mild form.....but since i was ten he used to have bad spells...they finally got the medication right after ten years of trial and error....outcome....a great Dad,,,,,,that worked hard for most of his life...now i make him comfortable and help him and my Mother as much as i can......its the least i could do for them...after all they put up with me all of those early years.....he has it pretty well under control and is in his 76th year......he developed it when he got a hockey stick in the head without a helmet,,,and had to learn to speak and walk all over again...scar tissue on his brain causes the spells...but as i say he's been seizure free for many years now....God love him ......a terrible affliction that wasn't understood back in the day.....with technology now it is now more treatable....i will wear my purple proudly.....good post cspears.....God speed all of those afflicted.....there is a light at the end of the tunnel....

It can be a horrible disease, but modern medications seem to be able to control the seizures pretty well and most people can live an "almost" normal life.

My 19 year old daughter has had a mild form since she was about 5. It made school difficult for her, but she is now seizure free without meds.

My wife's uncle died from a seizure in the mid 1980's. He played for the NFL and was in 3 superbowls, and it was probably all of the hits to the head that made his worse. He was jogging alone around a lake, suffered a seizure and rolled down an embankment and drowned. His girlfriend who was jogging a few yards behind him didn't seem him fall and jogged right past him.

My 15 year old daughter had a friend spend the night at our house a few months ago, and without warning her friend suffered a grand mal seizure while sitting at a computer. It was her first seizure and a shock to us and especially her family. She's on meds now and had a couple seizures since, but seems to be doing pretty well.

Hell we even have a cat with seizures. Must be something in the water out here.

My baby sister had epilepsy. She had her 1st major seizure when she was 6 years old. They thought they had it under control with medication but it was getting worse and they could not find anything wrong, even after several dozen EEG MRI and CAT scans. At age 36 she seized and passed away while her 2 kids were at school and her husband was at work. This was March of last year.

I can't believe she's gone.I want my baby sis back. She was such a cheerful and kind person. :crybaby: :crybaby: :crybaby:

Most excellent thread. Many people suffer from this disorder (calling it a disease makes some folks think you can catch it!). Wear purple, support those you know who have epilepsy. Many of the regional Epilepsy Foundations sponsor walks to support local programs, I would encourage any one with interest to seek one out, it is a couple of hours and a few bucks, but well worth it!

Cheers!

My sister has it and I will be wearing purple for her and your daughter!!! I wish we could cure this I've seen my sister have a very bad seizure when I was 9 yrs old and she was 5. It's very hard to watch them have one and know u can't do anything for them but hold them to make sure they don't get hurt.

My daughter had them whe she was about 10 yrs old and I being ignorant of them thought I had to stop her from choking on her tongue stuck my fingers in her mouth. I know duh that was a stupid thing to do but I still have my fingers. She was on meds for a couple years or so then without telling us she quit cold turkey not knowing she could have had a grand mall! Since then she has been symptom free. I thank God for that and I am so thankful she is living a normal happy life. Cspears I well wear my purple >XI< shirt for your daughter, my daughter and all victims of this horrible debilitating disorder.

Cspears I love you and your daughter and I hope that they can come and stay in control. I was born with epilepsy because my mother had a very hard labor I had what they called grand mal seizure everyday. I know how kids can be mean and think you are weak because of this but I tell everyone it has made me stronger as a person and taught me how shallow some people really are. I was on the strongest doses of medicine humanly possible with nothing to control them. Then in march 23 1989 I had surgery for it and no longer take the meds or have the seizures. Here is a picture after my surgery.

i also have it, from age 14, under control with meds, unless I don't take them or have to take a lot of painkillers.

my uncle had it all his life, had a fit alone in his flat, fell unconscious for 3 days before he was found dead.

we all love and support you darling, and purple is the colour to wear..

my uncle when he was a teenager in the early 80s was involved in major car accident that caused brain damage and led to him having very violent epilepsy attacks...he had to devices he had to carry on him at all times so when he have an attack u had to put one of em in his mouth to hold his tongue down to keep him from swallowing it....then the other one was to keep him from biting his tongue off....he was on meds for really long time....but  a few years ago he finally stop having them...but he still has to be on the meds for it...so yea i can feel ur pain...when the attacks come on they are extremely scary so i feel ur pain...gl with her and we will be prayin for her and support epilepsy awareness...nice post....thanx for bringing this up..very serious and dangerous disease this is...
