Security video footage showed the gunman pull out the .45-caliber pistol, raise it and point it across the aisle before putting it back against his side, authorities told the San Francisco Chronicle in a story on Monday. The man drew the gun several more times and once wiped his nose with the hand holding the weapon. "These weren't concealed movements — the gun is very clear," District Attorney George Gascon said. "These people are in very close proximity with him, and nobody sees this. They're just so engrossed, texting and reading and whatnot. They're completely oblivious of their surroundings." Authorities declined a request by The Associated Press for the surveillance footage, citing an ongoing investigation. San Francisco police officials say people who pay too much attention to digital technology are also vulnerable to theft. "Oftentimes when you interview people who get their phones stolen, when you ask them to describe where the person came from, what he was wearing, they have no idea," said police Chief Greg Suhr. Nikhom Thephakaysone, 30, has pleaded not guilty to charges including murder in the Sept. 23 attack on Justin Valdez, 20, a student at San Francisco State University who was shot in the back of the head as he left the train. Thephakaysone also has been charged with assault with a semi-automatic handgun. Prosecutors said he stuck a handgun in another man's back earlier the same night he shot Valdez as he looked for a victim. He did not pull the trigger and went on the hunt again for a victim for more than an hour, at one point waving a gun outside a Thai restaurant, Assistant District Attorney Scot Clark has said. He was also charged with illegally possessing an assault weapon after police said they seized two such rifles, combat knives and razors at his home. Police said he was carrying $20,000 in cash when he was arrested. baldie, hxtr, WolfTiS and 2 others 5 Awards

They will destroy this country as if it we were Romans. What else can you ask for? Technology period is screwing everything up. People don't learn math they punch buttons. So many examples plus all the misinformation being taught in all places. We are all about entertainment. Nothing else matter. Humans keep getting stupider and stupider as technology progresses. I'm living proof it. I use google to spell when the red underline can't even figure out what the hell I'm trying to spell. I work with the Army and am a veteran. Take away the electronics, and suddenly our guys can't move, shoot or communicate. Technology has some great purposes, but it will never replace good, old-fashioned, military training. America needs to be wise enough to see that in all things, fundamentals are key. Without the experience with smartphones, GPS, video controllers, audio equipment, touchscreens and texting, our new recruits would be to a great disadvantage. Using devices while dangerous situations happen and not noticing is probably more due to the fact that people use these devices sometimes to escape tense situations. To some, the bus, train, airport, street, school and even shopping requires reassurance by being connected to someone or something as a distraction. The future of new technology requires gains and failures to extract the best. The automotive industry is a good example. HarryWeezer 1 Awards

It's about being completely oblivious to the "real" world around you. It's like standing on the edge of the Grand Canyon and ignoring the real view in front of you to see pictures of it on your smart phone, and texting/tweeting about it instead of enjoying what for most is a once in a lifetime experience. I don't deny that there are many benefits to all of this technology, but I refuse to let it completely change my perception of the real world, only enhance it. I would much rather talk to a person face to face or on the phone than to text them. And forget tweeting.
