Hi peeps. I often(very often) lose ethernet connection on my pc. To combat it, i bought a second ethenet card, and a usb to ethernet connection. And i have a usb to wifi, but the wifi is dodgy, had to move the table directly over the router downstairs.

Now quite often i can't get ethernet, so i switch between the three, sometimes it comes on, most it doesn't,  but i always have wifi.

Does that mean the landlord is controlling what i can connect to?

As your a UK fellow if the house your in is old the walls are pretty thick so wifi signal degrades, hence moved nearer it picked up, also depends on the router to,sometimes restarting router to will help, as for direct link[ethernet cable] that could be just going naff also  as open reach are pretty blah , check the master socket,if its an old one [ newer shape look faceplate looks like two halfs]if its through homeplugs would look there to start  cheap ones like i have lucky if can get 4mps through them, guessing your in shared household

the other problem you may have is being shared house others using it ie netflix etc and landlord has base speed of 28mb,when you say wall socket guessing homeplug through mains there not very realiable[bit confusing when you say  3 other sockets] and if disconnected for to long will more like need re pairing

I have two ethernet sockets in the wall in my room.  One doesn't work, but the other one I'm plugged in to,  but it goes not working for days at a time,  and even if i put a brand new cable into it it doesn't. Then it if the blue, it does.

But the 3 sockets in my comp are the normal default one,  and two extras i bought trying to fix the problem

"I have two ethernet sockets in the wall in my room."  Sounds like you need Sally's wall-hack.  🤣  But do hope you get it straightened out.

wiring could be old standard, or the router could be the issue, some ppl i have heard they bought a secondary router to connect to the modem. sometimes the standard modem routing get mixed up. could be something simple like duplicate ip addresses on the router causing one to cut out. but i say if its coming from the wall there could be electrical interference on the wiring.  but im no techie just going by what i have seen and heard around. sorry if its no help

Bazza

question how are you connected to the internet....cable to modem, DSL to modem, wifi from landlord router ?

open a dos box and type " ipconfig/all "  do not post ipconfig list  here.  the list will show all connections.

other is to cleanup your attemps to connect with other hardware and what version of IPv4 or IPv6   the ISP using.

by typing  for IPv4  "ipconfig/release"  and for IPv6 "ipconfig/release6"  NOTE: only have the hardware you know is a good unit in working order connect to network.  once done then type "ipconfig/renew" for IPv4 and so for IPv6

if still have issues then need to   type "ipconfig/flushdns"  then type "ipconfig/registerdns"

if still a connection there but not on system  type "ipconfig /release *CON*"    name of connection
