CoD4 setup

Hi all,

It's been a while since I've been online and gaming. Life got a bit busy (but that's my own fault - I started studying again and am juggling that whilst working full time!).

However, I've just been able to buy a new laptop and have just installed CoD4 so you'll probably see me on the freezetag server there some time.

My question and reason for posting was to ask about setup for CoD4 on modern machines. What are your settings these days? And I remember I used to have a custom config file on my previous laptop, does anyone advise these?

Otherwise, after fresh install, all I have done is install to 1.7 and get on the freeze tag server.

Any ideas/tips would be much appreciated, thanks.

Using custom configs other than (a couple FPS and packet tweaks that make the game run a bit smoother especially if you have a mediocre internet connection) on our servers is generally frowned apon. It gives an unfair advantage.

Using a custom config Promod Config that alters game textures beyond the stock (Low, Normal, High, Extra) will get you banned. If you are running around pwning everyone and constantly emptying the servers you may be removed. It's part of the admins job to keep the server population up and the Drama to a minimum. 

 

 

Most people play with stock settings or just a couple of the following.This is all I use as well. Game never drops below 250FPS.

Draw your Lagometer on screen:  /cg_drawlagometer 1

/cg_fov 80
/com_maxfps 250 (FPS)* Do not set it to 333. That is not allowed.
/snaps 40

These 2 maxpacket tweaks help a bit with lag spikes and lowers your ping by 10-15.
/cl_maxpackets 100
/cl_packetdup 2

/rate 25000
/r_multigpu 1 (FPS)
/cl_mouseaccel 0 (MOUSE)

Snaps is the calculation of how many packets you receive from the server.

It's a latency/fps tweak that can take some of the jerky feeling out of movement. If set to high or to low it will make it feel like you have input lag 1 minute then supper smooth the next. Movement and aiming will feel quite sluggish especially on certain maps.

Default is 20. I may drop mine back to 30 because when the server gets full I do occasionally get that sluggish feeling when moving. 40 may be a hair to high.

Aweome! Thanks for the detailed response J3st3r this was exactly what I was looking for.

I did wonder after posting this if a config was against the rules and I remember the 333 being against the rules from the high days of promod.

 

I'll have a go at editing these tonight thought, thanks again!

I installed game, did updates, turned up brightness, kill kill kill, good times

I personally always use /+activate to always activate the use key aka you won't have to press f to defrost, just aim already works. It does come with some setbacks like having to deactivate it when you want to open doors or pick up a different weapon and it occasionally automatically picks up a weapon when you come out of spawn protection. On the other hand, you don't pick up another weapon while trying to defrost someone.

I personally once bound the command to a key, so I only have to press that key to activate, but otherwise you have to enter the command each time you start the game if you wanna use it.

No problem. It does help quite a bit especially if you have a higher ping to begin with.

Wow that's interesting for sure haha! Might try it in the future. But picking up weapons unintentionally also does sound a bit annoying.

for thawing use this  you can toggle it on and off when you accidentally pick up another weapon

Lol, forgot I could also bind unactivate to a key. Will do that when I go in again. I'll do it like that because I already have the +activate bound and that gave me some trouble last time. Had to put in some weird code someone helped me with, don't know why the normal code didn't work. But thank you

If you fix it like Loco says, it's very useful. Also because you might start defrosting someone right away when you come out, because you are accidentally already aimed at someone.

The picking up a weapon doesn't happen too often. Less than once per map, tonight I played for like 2 hours and it didn't happen once

and if you dont want to do it thru console you can call the file thru the game shortcut like this  just use iw3mp.exe exec thaw.cfg  just make sure theres a space before exec  now the file will be loaded when you start the game

I tried this today but didn't' seem to work... will have another go tomorrow! using /+activate worked well though :). Thanks all!

do you have cd copy or steam copy   my shortcut is for cd copy

I found a good intel 2020 recommended settings for cod 4 i set it up and it runs great  

its a graphics and texture settings page

Where can I find this? My game still crashes occasionally and can't do anything but reboot the computer

I'll check for no extra spaces but I just downloaded the file from the other thread you referenced earlier.

I do have a steam copy though... just changed to it as got a new laptop. But does this make a difference and if so how come?

The more populated the server gets the more often it happens

My game runs through steam, but I find it is more stable by turning off steam and changing my shortcut target to 

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Call of Duty 4\iw3mp.exe"

I have ordered a new network card in case that would improve stability as well

I have downloaded the cfg file but can't get it to work,

I am happy with using the ¬ and then typing /+activate in the game menu before joining the server.

What's your fps doing while playing? You can view it with "/cg_drawfps 1".

It was stable yesterday with steam bypassed, but on Saturday it was unplayable with big red spikes on the laggometer

I managed to have a quick go at lunchtime and my fps ranged from 150 to 250 depending on locations and whether I was frozen or not
