Sorry...I am sure this isn't the first time someone asked for help on this but in searching the forums I was unable to find a solution.....

New windows 11 Desktop computer

Installed from Steam account COD4

Can run single player but when switching to multiplayer....game just crashes.

IF I recall there are perhaps two things needing to be done. First, changing the iw3mp.exe file? Is this correct and if so where do I find correct file?

Second, I recall there may be some update changes 1.8 to 1.7 or something like that....

Can some one assist me on this. Thanks

Downloaded as suggested. Tried to run but kept getting message not compatible with digital version downloaded from Steam. Tried to run but still crashed after switching to multiplayer.... Any suggestions?

Install CoD4X Patch 21.1
The CoD4X patch is a patch for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare that improves the game's functionality and adds new features. To install the CoD4X patch, follow these steps:

https://cod4promod.eu/files/cod4/cod4x_client_21_1.zip

Extract the "cod4x_client_21_1.zip" archive and copy the "cod4-client-manualinstall_21.1" folder to your CoD4 directory.
Go into the extracted "cod4-client-manualinstall_21.1" folder and run "install.cmd".
Launch CoD4 and it will automatically update the CoD4X client.

If you want to change your game config, go to this path: C:\Users\YourUsername\AppData\Local\CallofDuty4MW\players

To install COD4x on a steam account you will need to follow these instructions

https://steamcommunity.com/app/7940/discussions/0/3203747834755371634/

Also COD4 is located here if installed by steam

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Call of Duty 4

You can run COD4 without steam running if you create a shortcut to your desktop

Thanks for feedback.

Totty...I am unable to get to multiplayer because game crashes before it opens. It starts in single player then I click on multiplayer and everything stops.

Loader... I copied iw3mp.exe file into directory. I renamed old one to oldiw3mp.  Tried to launch from single player by clicking on multiplayer...and it crashes. I went back to directory and the file I copied in now looks like this _iw3mp

Any ideas?

All the file I gave you will do is roll back the Steam version to Our 1.7 version...Steam version is 1.8 I believe

Single player is played using the iw3sp.exe file... "sp" notates single player where as the "mp" in iw3mp.exe notates "multi player"

I have started over a few times on my player profile from no fault of my own lol...Sucks but you get through it fast

Run as administrator, have had similar issue on win11

Symptoms observed (by me) on win11 without running as admin:

-Game crash on load

-Game crash right after "Setting up Game" when map loaded

-Some other servers would load into the game, typically unmodded servers.

-Single player works but not multiplayer

steam adds all the updates when you download it, quite convenient from the old days of the hard copy disk, you also need to go back (downgrade)to a certain version of punkbuster(there's a article on this in the XI community forum I believe)good luck !

Just lock the binary after you replace it.

Wait, this would be useful for me. How do I do that? Please make the steps as easy as possible, because otherwise I might still not understand 😬

Find your COD4 iw3mp.exe, right click on it and click create shortcut.

I should create a shortcut next to your original file.

Take your window off full screen,  you can now drag and drop your shortcut on to the desktop

iw3mp.exe is located at this address  C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Call of Duty 4

Thank you Totty!

I should have realized what you meant already 😅 but the detail was still appreciated and it's definitely appreciated that I can run COD now without steam. My computer thanks you for that 😆
