My wife and I just planted 218 tomato and pepper seeds today.  We start indoors around this time of year and then when the weather gets warmer we start to take the seedlings outside in the sun or the little greenhouse we have.  In early spring they have to come in at night, but later on they can stay out as long as there is no frost warning. We have been doing this for many years now and its a great hobby that also helps with the grocery bills.

Here are some pictures (greenhouse pictures are from last year as we still have snow on the ground here):

It's a very rewarding hobby.

Take care,

Sancho

Ha ha!

🙂

I can't say I never tried it.....or like Bill Clinton "I never inhaled"....but it was only in my youth and I never possessed any or bought any myself.  Just not for me.  I do like Bob Marley and Reggae....but that's as close as I get nowaday!

Sancho for the frost days  1 trip needed with a wagon cart with rack shelving on top of it bolted or weld it on to move in and out of green house, save alot of back and forth.

image.thumb.png.d48b8ecd4e662785b53bdce07869ab21.png

sure is rewarding,  and no chemicals add it for preservation.

I have something similar with slightly higher walls.  Yes, it make the job of transferring in and out much easier.

My other option is that I use a small radiator type heater to keep the temperature above zero in the greenhouse.  I have a wireless thermometer that keeps me informed as to the temperature in the greenhouse and also records the record high or low....so I know how cold it got overnight.  image.jpeg.493e83dfbf80769d333e3d57b3aa7b66.jpeg

@Sancho_ Very nice I’m in NB what province are you in? With that many tomato plants you must be preserving them or treating a lot of people!

I’ve been known to plant a bit of veggies as well. As you said it’s very relaxing. Took a break last year and hopefully I get into the garden again..

Wow!  Nice pictures!

Looks like you have a nice size garden plot.

And yes, we freeze and can a lot of our produce.  Gardening is a great hobby as it gets you close to the earth.

Home gardening is like telling the big corporations and the government, "I don’t need you to eat!" When you grow your own food, you don’t have to rely on stores, big farms, or even paying taxes on what you grow. It’s a way of saying "no thanks" to the rules that tell you what to do and how to spend your money. You’re doing it your way, sticking it to the man, and showing that you can take care of yourself without needing their control.

Trump's Tariffs and Trudeau's Carbon Tax does not apply...to my home garden, YET!

We plant heirloom seeds and collect and dry our own each year to minimize having to purchase them.  I also plant more than I need so that I can give away to family and friends.   It's great when others start different varieties than you do say tomatoes and peppers and you can exchange seeds as well.

Take care,

Sancho

I remeber when I was a kid my Mom & Dad had a garden, it was nothing to go out and pick a tomato off the vine and wipe it off and eat it like an apple... The good old days!

That's awesome!  I'm hoping to grow a few things this year but it's a challenge in our Zone 8.  The heat kills everything.  I might need to buy shade cloth.

Can you just start earlier before the weather gets too hot?

in USDA Hardiness Zone 8, average minimum winter temperatures range from 10°F to 20°F (-12.2°C to -6.7°C), indicating a mild climate with a long growing season.
