hey,

can anybody recommend a UPS?  needs to be able to shut down pc safely.  Only need about 5min back up power.  Battery pack should be easily replaceable.

Not sure how i work out the power of UPS i'll need but i'm running win 7 with 3 internal HDD, 3 external HDD, BR/RW DVD/RW, 32" LCD monitor, printer and security camera software.  Don't think i need to worry about the monitor but am concerned about HDD damage, getting an average of 3 blackouts a week, which will only get worse as the winter draws in.

don't want to pay a fortune, and must run 240v in

thx

i have a few APC mge ups systems, for several different use, for example my father have one so that even in case of a power outage, the garage door still can be open :)

the simple units is not that expensive and really helpful

at my place i use two of them for 2 different pc, and one for the modem.

but read carefully the manual, as some of the plugs are only 'protecting' and some are for the ups

I heard that Fed X and UPS were joining together and they would be called FedUp.

Have a look at the Belkin range - I have one here and it is supposed to be good for 20-30 minutes.  It also cleans up the power supply to ones kit so spikes don't do any harm.

Don't get one to small. I have a 1250 ACP with 11 min of backup. If it's to small your PC will still turn off on you.

Oh jeez... shitty avatar pic...

Lol..I'd say go big or go home. If you need a  UPS for a gaming rig, even if you need 5 minutes only of backup, will require a big UPS.

What's your PSU? You're from the UK, dunno if they sell Kill-a-what device at the hardware store over there...it's cheap...like $15 US dollars. Hook this up to the wall outlet, plug in your power bar to measure max power draw.

It'sKill-A-Watt.jpg this...

It give you the exact reading of the power draw at the wall. There must be 240v versions where you live. That could help you to choose an appropriate UPS... I wuldn't buy anything below 800 Watts APC models tho...
