Picked this baby up today. It's a Ruger SR-556 Carbine. I still gotta get some ammo for it. It's my first AR, and I'm excited to shoot it.

I've been 'studying' AR's for a while now. I almost bought a Colt, a Bushmaster, a Smith and Wesson, and a sweet rifle from a small local manufacturer Arrow Arms. I saw this one in the Armslist and since it was a Ruger (and I love them), I did some reading. This is not a direct gas impingement operated action, like most AR's, but a piston action. There are a lot of piston conversions out there for gas action rifles, but this was designed to be a piston action gun. I like the look of the gun as well, and its stats are real good. You can read about it here or here. I also got a sweet deal on this one, about $400 to $500 dollars off what it is valued (with some upgrades and if it were new of course). It's got little use and looks new.

I've looked at literally hundreds of AR's, held dozens of them. I've shot exactly zero, so I'm not sure that I'm the one to give you any advice.. but I hope this is a sweet rifle.

Nice Shooter Bama.I have wanted to up grade to something for a while,I too like Ruger,as I have multiple pistols over the years. There might be better out there but for the money its hard to beat there action and dependability.I have shorty Sks and WWII m1 and a few others that Gator and Bronco and I go shoot some.We love to shoot.I have shot Ar's Ak's and Even a true p90.And a Spa nothing like shooting 12 g semi :)) Ar's run around 900 to 1100 last time i looked, but thats been a while so not sure of really good prices now but sounds like you did good.Gator and I will have to hook up someday and unload some shells :)) take care...

I got to shoot it Tuesday. It shoots real sweet, even with iron sights. I can't wait to get some optics on it. Would anyone like to donate $1000 towards an Eotech holographic sight and a 3X multiplier scope? I'm not proud :)

I own two Bushmasters AR15's (regular length and the M4 variant) and an AK47 clone (Romania made). Anymore they are all pretty close in quality. So it comes down to the small cosmetic differences and price. Just make sure the one you settle on has a chrome lined barrel. Some of the cheaper models dont chrome the inside of the barrel. Bama, the Aimpoint red dot sites are nice too. But again its a preference thing. Take your gun to a store and have them mount the different sites on it to see which feels more comfortable to you in a quick site. One may be easier for you to acquire the target. For me I tried both and the Aimpoint worked better. I hope you wore hearing protection when you first fired it !!! The AR's are pretty damn loud. Congrats on the new toy !!!
