I have got a clicking hard drive and it happens to be the "c" drive that has the operating system on.Im experiencing slow responses when accessing this drive and sometimes freeze ups.

I am making another internal hard drive empty at the moment and my plan would be to, if possible clone the starting to fail c drive to the one that is healthy.

Problem is I dont have the know how.

I am able to still use the pc but I dont think its going to be long before it fails to boot.

I do still have the windows 7 operating system on disc which I purchased but i thought that to clone then boot from new drive would be my best option then remove the old drive and throw it over next doors garden!

Any help would be appreciated as i do not have any clone/mirror image software etc.

Thnx in advance.

Maxtor has a utility that allows you to clone your master drive. Usually ships with any new hard drive, but you can find it on their website. Install your new drive as a slave and boot from something else (cd or thumb) with the clone utility. Hurry m8, the ship is going down........

The drive is dying, and will go at any time. Try Clonezilla http://clonezilla.org/. It works like Norton Ghost, and it's a very trusted app, and even better, it's free. Good Luck!

If your drives are the same size, the built in for windows works great. If they are different sizes then you'll need something aftermarket.

Start button, do a search for Back up, the first one should be Back up and Restore. Open it, left side of that window has 2 options

Create a System Image and Create a System Repair Disc. Create System Image is what you want.

When you click it, it will be looking for something to back up to. I used an external USB hard drive for the image.

I also went ahead and made a new repair disc as well.

Swapped out the hard drives when all that was done. When you boot up with the repair disc in and the externel drive plugged in, the onscreen guides you through the rest, from what I remeber. It took about 45 minutes and everything was installed and working, and not required to re-activate windows.

ok i was lazy and didnt read all the comments. iw been working with pc´s my whole live. your hard drive is going dry, under the harddrive therers a thing that spins. you could try to spray it with oil...we in sweden have some thing called 556 spray oil. but i also would recommend you to get an extarn hd to copy over all the info you dont wanna loose. its just getting dry but with a little bit of sprayoil you can get the sound away and lengten the life of the hard drive. also vacume and spray all the fans you have and you will get a silent pc,. // Rusty

Thanks to everyone who posted to help me out,I have made note of Simplemods reply as everyday is a learning day, kaptcrunch too.

A massive thanks to Cavey who arrived in his cape as "Computer Repair Man"!! I was not expecting help so soon and could not have got it sorted so quickly without the help.

Im now installing all of my games again and will hopefully complete that today.

When I chat to new members about this clan, this is something I tell them that there are so many members with such a vast amount of knowledge that we can lean on for support and help and this was an example of it.

Once Again guys many thanks.

Rockape.
