If I recognize the page I might give it a shot if it seems of interest, Other than that I do not open links anymore than I would from an unknown e-mail address. Perhaps I am being over cautious but I prefer to exercise care in opening links. Am I over reacting? Are there virus protections when a link is posted in the forum? You get the point. Just curious.

Never from a web site. well no antivirus will stop something being installed if Java..... not Java script but Java is installed. Happened to me a few times and a pain to clean off that fake antivirus program. BASTARDS!!!! if you really want to be safe and surf, click, install, test... get SandBox. Some cool shit. It runs whatever program you run in a virtual and does not have access to you OS. It really is cool stuff. When you are done.. close it and all it gone. Check it out well worth it for many reasons. No need for an Antivirus these days. Have not had one installed for a very long time. BTW this is a safe link. hahahaa http://www.sandboxie.com/ Edited June 9, 2013 by hxtr DEEJAYKEG 1

I don't click on links, when a video is in the post I'll watch it. I don't know how viruses get on a computer, I just know you gotta be careful with what you click on and what you download aka save on ur computer. Live and learn! HellKid and Bogleg 2 Awards

This is for nought, however, if Java is active in your browser - as Hxtr says, if you insist on retaining it (you don't need it), make sure it doesn't run a malicious program on your PC or you are screwed. For me it has been more than adequate. Periodically I will run a scan with Malwarebytes. And I do visit sites of of less than moral nature.

Do not open those emails, just delete. When it comes to clicking links while on the web or in forums, well, it always takes a bit of caution. You just need to have some good judgement of what sites you are visiting and if you are visiting sites of "less than moral nature", then maybe more caution is needed but for the most part, you should be ok. Keep in mind, no one antivirus or antimalware software is perfect so don't stop using your brain and simply rely on software. Xalandra 1 Awards

I am just not sure how these infections are spread.

I am just not sure how these infections are spread. The phishing emails disguise the criminals' sites as supposedly legitimate links to ones bank etc etc but I haven't heard of malware that substitutes such links "on the fly". The greater and more common risk is if the web site administrator has not secured his site and a hacker has injected code to infect visitors' PCs - known as a "drive by". A useful little plug-in that is supported by some financial entities and companies is Trusteer Rapport. This sits in your browser and checks whether the "bank" site really is the bank site, protecting you from a "man in the middle" attack.
