Hello my old friends I have a adult age son who plays WOW and has told his mom he wants a better graphics card from the Nvidia 8800 he is currently running. Does anyone have any advice for me or maybe a old card you are not using you want to sell? Please let me know. He is running windows 7 now but is thinking about installing 10. His PC has a nice quad core processor in it just sure on the specs. Thanks in advance for any help with this project she gave to me

When you consider a GPU you must consider your PCU

How big of a power supply is in there now ?

Is he running a Intel or a AMD board ?

Won't take much of an upgrade to better the 8800.

If it's a Quad core AMD the motherboard is either AM2+ AM3 or AM3+.All of which support PCIE16x

My brother plays WOW He uses a GTX 750 ti and gets around 90fps on Ultra settings. It dips down to around the 40-60fps mark on big raids.Which is still really good. There a reasonably cheap card.Being that WoW is optimized for Nvidia video cards I would stick with them.

Here found this little gem $89.99 refurbished http://www.ebay.com/itm/EVGA-02G-P4-3757-RX-GeForce-GTX-750-Ti-2GB-128-Bit-GDDR5-PCI-Express-3-0-FTW-w-/381244645109?hash=item58c3f39ef5:g:ZtgAAOSweW5VRh8Z

I had problems using my old ATI 7870 card for WoW.FPS would dip down into the teens 17-19fps on big raids.Thinking it was the driver I was using but I'm not sure.My brother with his little gtx750ti didn't have any problem with it even though our video cards had very similar stats.Again that might also be because WoW is Nvidia Optimized.

That video card is out of stock Pvt,Death. However, I did find this decent card. For what he is doing it will be plenty good enough. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125774

im still not so sure I would choose a refurb if the difference is so small in price. And if the price is the big of a deal Id go Gigabyte. At least it would be new, which is really important.

I really like EVGA for there very quick RMA program. They usually ship out the new card the minute that you send them a tracking number for the old card.Gigabyte stuff is a pain in the ass to RMA.Atleast my Gigabyte Windforce R9 290X 4gb card was.Took them just over 2 weeks to get my card back.Had to use my old xfx 6870.Wish EVGA sold ATI cards.

This Gigabyte card?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125502

Lol Looked at it and it uses the Same junk fans that my card has.My card had 1 of the 3 fans on it stop working 1 month after I got it.Not something you would expect especially when you spend $240 for a video card.

Here's my card.

For $149.99 you get 3 year warranty.Or $89.99 for 1 year warranty.$60 difference

$149.99

or

$89.99

You might as well get a GTX 960 for $179 with $30 mail in rebate card. With 3 year warranty

I would stay with Windows 7, I have Windows 10 on my laptop and really don't like it...

Recommend specs for WOW are...

Windows 7/Windows 8 64-bit (latest Service Pack)
Intel Core i5 2400 or AMD FX-4100 or better
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470, ATI Radeon HD 5870 or better

http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/14580888055

I would make sure your current Win 7 is 64, not 32 (upgradeable)

Lots of good suggestions above, of course with Cyber Monday being today a lot of great deals

straight away Im thinking R9 series. Maybe a 280x/380x depending on what his current situation is on heat? Look NOW before sales are off. I think you can get a 280x for around £120 right now which is super cheap

Better off getting a reasonably priced upper scale card that will last for awhile instead of a card you need to upgrade next year.

Thanks guys for the advice and this is something we are going to get him for Christmas so spending a few hundred dollars is fine. So far it looks like maybe this card

EVGA GTX 750 2GB FTW G-Sync Ready/ACX Cooling .

I can pick it up for about $160.00 new from a brick and mortar store about 5 miles from my work so if I have any issues I can take it back right away. Once I go down there if they have a better card on sale for not much more I may grab it. He likes to run multiple screens which this can do well so with your help I may be a Hero this year. Thanks guys

Only thing I don't like about the Gigabyte cards are the fans. They are very low quality and don't push much air.If the fan dies and you don't catch it fast the card will burn up.My Gigabyte card has 3 fans on it and I have to run them at 100% to keep my card below 52c while playing COD4.If I let them on auto the card gets up to 72c and throttles down both Memory and Core clocks to 1/3 the speed.I've looked at other coolers but can't afford another $100 for a decent one.

just dont go low tier. higher tier card will go longer before they need upgrading. im still using my 6970's with no intention of upgrading yet after 4 1/2 years. i doubt that would be the case if i had gotten 6930's or 6950's

Hey guys thanks for the tips and advice on the Graphics Card upgrade for our Son. We decided to go big and get him something he could use for several years so I purchased him the msi gtx 960 4 gig card and he loves it. Thanks again. His birthday is in May so I suspect he will be getting a 4K monitor for his present
