So this is a little old, but it came up in my memories and I saved it because I just so love when your favorite author responds to you. Talk about Nerdgasm! :yahoo:

So with that......who's your favorite author and what genre?

My favourite authors: (I am a huge fantasy fan, not the kid like fantasy but proper, we don't sugar coat this shit fantasy).

Terry Goodkind - Sword of Truth Series (it's like, 17 books long).

Trudi Canavan - She has written three trilogies and a prequel, as outlined below; a prequel, one trilogy that follows a couple of characters and a plot to reignite a war, a second trilogy that follows that persons Son and the attempt at keeping an uneasy peace, another trilogy set in a different world where 5 immensely powerful magicians get bored (as it were) and try to start a war between two different countries, the 5 magicians posing as deities from each country. The 4th trilogy, the 3rd book not out yet is set in a universe where travel between worlds is possible with magic and there is someone who is out to control each world in the books universe. (I suck at explaining things) but I try to keep things spoiler free.

Robert Jordan - Wheel of Time (it's 14 books long) and the world is huge, the scope of it and feel of it is something like Tolkien.

I have nearly finished The Sword of Truth series. Recently finished The Omen Machine, just been looking for the one after it. It's by far one of the best series I have ever read and to me it beats anything else, hands down.

I have only finished the first three books of The Wheel of Time. The book store near me doesn't have book 4 but they do have book 5 so it is a kind of kick in the teeth. I might have to order it online. Perhaps get it for myself for my birthday in a few weeks.

Rankin and Robinson for me, two UK crime writers, loved most of Hemingways and hated the rest, science fantasy does nothing for me I'm afraid.

I, like you, am an avid reader. I always have my kindle on me and have a book on the go wherever I am! Right now I am 5 or 6 trilogies deep into Terry Brooks Shannara series. I love anything with magic and dragons and elves and shit like that. My favorite series would have to be The Sword Of truth series by Terry Goodkind, I love that even above that fat non writing bastard George Martin whom I have been waiting since 2011 for the next book in the Song Of Ice And Fire series (Game Of Thrones) and who is probably going to die before it gets released!!!

I prefer long series compared to just a single novel. JD Robb's series In Death is over 40 books long, great reads!

Jim Butchers series The Dresden Files is an amazing read too.

So many great series!!!! Fuck I love reading!!

If you like these have you checked out Raymond E Feist  "The Riftwar Series"  GREAT read, about 20 books or so in the series, One of my top 5 reads for sure

I love Fantasy, and this might sound depressing, as it's a way for me to just get out of this shitty existence and society. Seriously, fuck this society and un-needed stress! Books are a great way to escape. You are given the words, but you envision the world in your head with your imagination. My depiction of say, the characters and locations in Terry Goodkind's work will be very different from someone else'.

Nothing depressing or stupid about it Death. That's what the author wants. For you to come into their story, and make it your reality. It's a great escape, and it makes you use your imagination. Anyone here read Lord of the Rings as well? I actually read those books once every year since I have been 10. I love them. JRR Tolkien was a vision.

J aurai juré death : harry potter lol

Apologies, I just feel that sometimes I read to escape way too much. Tolkien was a vision and I do believe he defined the genre as a whole.

Look on my shelves and all you'll spot are the following:

Every Stephen King book from Carrie right through to End Of Watch (Also have Gwendy's Button Box on order released next week in UK)

Every Discworld book by Sir Terry Pratchett, a UK Sci-Fantasy novellist from The Colour Of Magic (which is Octarine if you really must know) through to The Shepherds Crown which was published just after his death so will be the last Discworld novel ever... :,-(

Also for those who like a bit more gore then try out Brian Lumley's Necroscope series... Brilliant books about a man who can talk to the dead and his fight against Wamphyri from a parallel dimension who have access to Earth through gates, their kind came through many years ago and gave rise to our stories of vampires, where our vampires would bite your neck and suck your blood the Wampyri would bite your neck and probably continue biting until there is nothing left of you!!

I am a huge King fan, but who isnt? lol

I feel StormCrow's pain about Martin and his possibility of not finishing these books, but I have been here before with King, so have hope! :-)  The main difference between King and Martin is he was truthful from the get go about his writing of the Dark Tower series, whereas Martin is just enjoying his newfound fame/status and is slacking like a mofo.

HUGE Dark Tower fan - I surely hope the upcoming movies are up to snuff. King movies are either great or shite.

I also enjoy Brian Lumley - especially the Necroscope series!
