My current computer is getting old and unreliable and I am in the market for a new laptop that would be strong enough to run COD4 and other current online XI games.  Do you use a laptop for gaming?  If so, what brand/type do you use/recommend for gaming?

My son in law just bought a Asus ROG laptop.  He has not been disappointed.

But then again, you can build a nice desk top for the price of a gaming laptop, and be able to expand at your convenience. just my thoughts...( for the new games )

I dont have a recommendation for a laptop. I will just agree that your first question is whether or not you need mobile, and then mobile gaming, because of the price. For years we have heard about the demise of PCs outside of business but laptops just cant keep pace with growing technologies and the ever-increasing needs of software.

Keep an eye on www.woot.com.  HP puts Factory Refurbished Omen laptops up there for cheap.  There are still a few left...

Woot's parent company is Amazon, for what it's worth, so you're not getting complete garbage.

This one, for example: https://computers.woot.com/offers/hp-omen-15-6-fhd-intel-i7-gtx1050-gaming-laptop-2?ref=w_cnt_wp_8_4

I use an older Gigabyte with just an intel i7 4th generation (mediocre to antique in the i7 range) and an NVidia GTX 1080 graphics card with 8gb of dedicated ram (mediocre for a gaming machine, very good for a regular machine).  I get 200 frames per second pretty consistently in COD4 at full resolution and high graphics settings.  Maybe down to 120-150 on some of the more complex maps, or while I'm downloading smurf porn in the background.  I think it would be about a $300-$400 machine right now used on eBay.  You don't need a ton of horsepower to run COD4.
