No matter where you stand on Covid or the Jab ... you should have at the very least observed how fragile our food supply system really is.  A year ago I decided to do something about it.  Today I have a freezer full of meat and 15 birds that will start laying eggs soon.  And a 1/4 acre garden.   Even if you just stockpile canned food each grocery trip, if things go tits up again in the fall, at least you'll have something to fall back on.

And yes ... it really does taste like chicken.

@Yoshi do you have one of those vac sealers? I love mine they work great. What ever you are sealing it has to be DRY or it will not seal if moisture escapes. Just partially freeze things so liquid will not be vacuumed under the seal.

I don't maybe for next year.  I had one a couple years ago, but it was crap.  Which one do you have?

@Yoshi

I have a food saver GAMESAVER I purchased from Costco 5 years ago. The model I have has camo skin on it. I see a similar one in costco.ca but it has lots of recent bad reviews.

We seal whole chickens, steaks, hamburgers, corn, as long as these are dry. meat should be partially frozen as I mentioned about the moisture getting trapped under the seal. The manual also mentions putting a paper towel damn to stop moisture from goimg beyond the seal

Raising your own food, canning, freezing & storing are work intensive, but very rewarding. I wish everyone had a chance to farm & raise livestock during their lives, they might appreciate how much work goes into producing food. The best part is the meal though, makes it all worthwhile. 😋

Of course a big part of that fragility is when people panic. Dealt with that every day when covid was bad with people pushing others around to buy shit they really didnt need. There were a large number of items that were perpetually out of stock because of it, as we all know. Thats the nature of such things of course and it always happens for one reason or another on a much smaller scale.

However we never got even close to running out of food. Part of the panic is the entitled nature of people. If they cant get the specific things they want, down to specific brand names, they complain. In the middle of a pandemic. A great many understood that panic buying was a big part and while it sucked it wasnt the end of the world. Others expected everything to run just as smooth as they would otherwise anyway.

Just an observation about greedy people that dont know how good they've got it compared to many other places in the world.

As soon as I get a home I will start raising chickens, if not for the eggs!  My parents used to can just about everything when we were growing up as kids in Oregon.  Not many fruit trees around here like we had as kids.  We had a beautiful cherry tree in the back yard and had to pick them and can them quick every year.  Used to pick black berries like crazy too!
