i am ready to upgrade...HOORAY AND ABOUT TIME!!!. I have the nvidia gt9500 (thx again bushape!!!) to install in my hp pavillion a6500f. I am pretty sure it will fit because it came equipped with a nvidia gforce 7100, if i'm wrong someone please tell me.

the vid card requires a minimum of 350w. I had thought to go with 430 from some stuff i saw on newegg.com. What i need to know before i attempt this amazing feat are two things...

1)  what psu will fit my chasis.(or is all that stuff pretty standard?) I've looked for specs to say yeah or nay but cant seem to find them. Not being a tekkie i dont really know where to go or what keywords to try for the appropriate info. I would hate to order something online, get it, and find out it doesnt fit.

2) how much wattage do i really need. A dude at work told me that about 425 should be more than enough. However, my rig is primarily for gaming and i want my card to perform admirably, so i dont know if overpowerning the system (i.e 500-600w) will be good, bad, or ugly in the end.

as always, i appreciate any feed back from any of my fellow idiots. I am heartened to know that being an idiot doesnt necessarily make you a friggin moron!!!Thx folks!

Buying a larger power supply won't overpower your system. Your components will only draw what juice they need from the power supply. I usually advise going a bit above the minimum wattage required, as there may be some factors in your system not considered in the recommendation (i.e. additional hard drives or other stuff that's drawing power). 450 ought to do the trick for your system.

For the future reference of those buying new PSU's, wattage isn't all you need to be looking at. You should make sure you have enough amperage on the different rails of the power supply (particularly +12V) to power more demanding components. In your case Billy, that card oughtn't give you any trouble. Good luck! :)

Final edit, I swear:

Minimum of a 350 Watt power supply.
(Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 18 Amp Amps.)

^-- Just pasted that from Newegg - for the EVGA GeForce 9500GT 1GB model. That's what I was talking about.

This ended up being a tad longer than I intended. Sorry. LMAO

You shouldn't have any problem with the power supply fitting in your chassis... I'm not really familiar with the HP cases, but I imagine any ATX power supply will fit.

EDIT: In terms of brands, I like Corsair. A little more pricey than others, but they make a nice power supply.

I run a Corsair 1000w. Im with Sonovabich on this one and the reason is that if u ever upgrade again u may be needing more power.  The Corsair has the high power 12v rails that are needed to run the accessories cleanly and makes very little noise.  As for fitting in your case, I dont know.  Most of the PSU's are standard in there fittment in the chassis but I dont know how old yours is.  Newegg has a forum available to ask these questions.  Hope this helps.

Don't be cheap on PSU. There are only 4 or 5 fabrics that makes them, but will have other stickers on them. With PSU's you better watch some reviews by internet to make your quality descision on á PSU.

Use some (free) PSU Calculators of what your plans are in the next year as in upgrading. After a year the power will drop for like 10 to 15%.

Don't ever take cheap ones or lets say, stay over 130 dollars :) (even with redraw money).

My CM M700Watt is to low if I plan, to take a second videocard, but will see!

your HP case is classed as a mid-size ATX so a standard ATX PSU should be ok.  However, before buying any PSU, double check the physical dimensions (heigth, width, and depth) to make sure it would fit properly.  If you need to, measure the size you have now and that will give you an idea to what you can fit in your case.  as others have stated, don't go to cheap and go with a bit more power than you may need right now with thinking of future upgrades.  modular cableing is also nice and clean but not necessary and look for one that has a 6 pin PCI-E power connector.

Definitely don't go low with your PSU rated wattage. If your PSU can't give you the juice that you need, you'll get odd system problems, crashes etc. I found that out 3 years ago or so. My current rig has a PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750w (before PCP&C were bought) and it's an awesome unit. When I build my next rig, it'll have a 1200-1500w power supply to power dual video, multiple drives etc.

The current issue of CPU (Computer Power User) has a large review of current power supplies, and ranks them from budget, mid-range to high-end. Well worth the read.

FWIW, I'm scoping out Corsair, Cooler Master, Antec, and OCZ brands. Look for units that are 80 Plus Certified "Gold" - these are higher efficiency, quieter, and cooler.

Good luck!

Always get more than you need when it comes to power supplies.A power supply will degrade over time and lose some of it's rated output. A border-line psu might be good in the beginning but may be a problem down the road.

Your going to need a drill to make new screw holes in the back of your case.( don't worry about it its a HP case) HP Dell most of the others are all propietary cases and parts inside. That would be the only issue you have. For what size get the most you can afford and insure its a good brand clean power is a nice thing. Power spikes from crap supplys fry out the other components quite often. 450 is a base size I would say.

I'm running a 1350 watt--power supply is most overlooked component and actually REALLY important.Check out PC POWER AND COOLING.

They have THE BEST P/S'S!! bar none!!!!!!!!.I don't know what your cpu is but 350 watts+ cpu +fans ?My thought ==600w min. on most any good comp nowadays.Plus with a good p/s you don't get voltage spikes and noise that can harm your comp.A good p/s will be quite heavier than a cheap one but same size.

well, i finally decided and purchased my power supply.

after much research and consideration ( and a bit of trepidation) i settled on this...

pc power and cooling/silencer/750 watt/quad pci express/SATA ready/80 plus. Should be here in a few days....then i test my anti idiot hack to see if i can self install power supply and vid card. I just wish i was smart enough to post a pic...not that it matters. It doesnt look fancy with the dual fans an nice sleek box or nothing...looks standard but i think has  the guts (and same fan config for my store bought unit) so wish me luck when the day arrives to test my skill and resolve. Thx again to all who responded to keep me straight.

450 watt is enough  i  had one  9500  and if you using that card for a while  dont  over power  i think  40 dollar  you have one

Why selling  more power  ore you  have to grade up  the 9500  to a newer card in a while than buy  a psu with more powersupply

But than you have to know witch card  you will take than

And  you can google  for Psu  calculator  than you see what you  need excatly

Only  thing you can think about it  if you take a modulair  one
