OK, my new PC build was humming along just fine, but then yesterday, it just restarted like 3 times for no reason.  Actually, the first time, it just went dark and kicked me out of all I was doing and I had to turn it off.  The other times it actually restarted.  The message that came up on reboot said that Windows had recovered from a serious error, but I don't know what it was....it did say that it blue screened.

What would cause a random restart on a bran new system that was working fine???

can be everything LOL

but if its a blue screen that might help

go to control panel/ system and security/ system/advanced system settings

settings of startup and recovery/ uncheck automatically restart

so the bsod should stay when it crashes

write down what caused the bsod and try to google it

hope that helps Cool

Make sure everything is still seated properly, power cables, video card, memory, etc.

You can run this program and it will analyze the crash dump from the blue screen and show you what was involved in the crash;

check and see if a heat problem but normally the machine will lockup from heat.

An os/driver kind of thing..... get the STOP codes like Nightmare said. Write down all the numbers.. 0X000020304440 kind of numbers... like 3 of them or more.

You can also check the evenlog.. Right click Computer or my computer icon and choose manage. You will see eventlog, open each and see if you see lots of read or yellow. Some may be normal but you can get info there.

Thanks for the advice guys , I am sure I will be able to get the BSOD figured out if it happens again.

Well, there we have it....looks like an NVIDIA Krnl Mode Driver is the problem.....

2 crash dumps have been found and analyzed. A third party driver has been identified to be causing system crashes on your computer. It is strongly suggested that you check for updates for these drivers on their company websites. Click on the links below to search with Google for updates for these drivers:

nvlddmkm.sys (NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 285.62 , NVIDIA Corporation)

Yep, that's an nvidia driver issue or a sign of the card starting to fail. This can also point to a possible error with the hard drive.....it might be corrupting data. I recommend a few things:

1) Browse to the c:\nvidia folder on your hard drive and delete it and all contents.

2) Run check disk to clean up the file system in case there's trash from the crash. Open windows explorer, right click on your C: drive icon>properties>tools>CHECK NOW. Windows will ask if you want to "schedule a check", select YES then reboot the PC.

3) Download Ccleaner and run it:

http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

4) Download and install the newest video card driver from nvidia.

Windows 7 handles video card driver updates very well. However, I'm old school so I usually uninstall the old driver, reboot and install the new driver with Windows running in VGA mode. If you're troubleshooting a problem, that's the best method.

I forgot, pull your video card and CLEAN it. It could also be a simple overheating issue. Do you know your idle and load video card temps?

go with a total fresh install of the graphic drivers

this can be caused by many things....but thats the first thing to start with...

have done a little research but I have to hurry a bit and will post some stuff later

you bought the P8Z68-V PRO right?

try the reinstall of the nvidia drivers first....

but there are three new bios versions of the motherboard

under bug fixes:

fix random crashes if some graphic cards are installed

if the graphic driver reinstall is not working try the bios update

Sounds more like one of your MS updates keeps rebooting your system. Here's a link to check when you last updated and see if it coincides with the begining of your problem. HERE I forget how to delete them and reload them one of our more MS people can help you I'm sure. Good luck

Need more info like MB Brand, Model and REVISION of MB for manufactor changed a chip supplier meaning new instructions for bios.  Note will see printed on MB  Ver:X.XX  get this info before any updating bios

also NEVER flash your bios in windows, you have to flash it in DOS by USB stick thats bootable without autoexe.bat, config.sys

just your bios file and flasher from MB maker. read all notes from MB site about flashing and the fixes for bios version

ok that out of the way  then get all current drivers for MB and OS bit(32or64)  (audio,chipset,video,data) that are WHQL certified

PigDog  sounds may need to use released drivers for video not the BETA drivers or roll back one driver version

I think you nailed the problem as it clearly says on the Asus BIOS revision history that the older BIOS has a random crash issue.

OK, this is still happening randomly.  It only happens when I am gaming - not when doing anything else.  Today I uninstalled my NVIDIA Drivers and ran DriverSweeper to get rid of all the crap.  I booted in Safe Mode and got rid of remaining NVIDIA stuff.  Rebooted and loaded the newest driver in Safe Mode.  Within 30 minutes ,it crashed again.  the BSOD recorded this in

Who Crashed:

On Sat 1/28/2012 10:33:01 PM GMT your computer crashed
crash dump file: C:\Windows\Minidump\012812-9001-01.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: watchdog.sys (watchdog+0xA577)
Bugcheck code: 0x117 (0xFFFFFA800CB674E0, 0xFFFFF8800F9D69C8, 0x0, 0x0)
Error: VIDEO_TDR_TIMEOUT_DETECTED
file path: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\watchdog.sys
product: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System
company: Microsoft Corporation
description: Watchdog Driver
Bug check description: This indicates that the display driver failed to respond in a timely fashion.
The crash took place in a standard Microsoft module. Your system configuration may be incorrect. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver on your system which cannot be identified at this time.

What the hell else can I do to figure this out?  My temeratures never run over about 51 degrees, but are usually in the 40's.  I just don't know what this could be.  The NVIDIA 570 card is brand new.....could it be bad?  How do you check the card?  Should I pull it out and put in an old card to see if that does anything?

oh- the Mobo is an ASUS P8Z68-V PRO.  Memory Voltage is at 1.50 V.  I have 4 sticks of G.Skill RipJaws 4096 for a total of 16 GB.  PC3-12800 (800 MHz).

I just changd my Audio settings and will try that in game too, since sometimes Audio and Sound Drivers and settings can cause this.

One other thing that is weird......if I minimize my screen in COD4, it always gives me a DirectX Error when I go back into the game and maximize the screen.  That has never happened before either.   Help!!

Well my two suggestions would be-

First since you have had so many crashes check for corrupted files. You may have fixed the main error but could be getting others because of file corruption. Open cmd prompt as admin and type in sfc /scannow

Second install Who Crashed as it will give you a more detailed description of the error.

Sorry Gump didnt see your post Laughing

Id did see a post here about a possible fix have you seen it?

Have you got it sorted yet?

Out of all the posts and suggestions I see here, seems something was overlooked.

You say this is a brand new build... did you OVERCLOCK? That alone could be causing problems.

If so crank it down a notch or go back to standard speeds and see what happens.

ok buddy,

I thought you have OCed it but good to know the issue is not there LOL

I really hope its not a bad GPU but this error is well known....

I found a post of an Nvidia Tech support guy ....

he said a possible fix can be a rollback to a 275.XX driver

and here are the newest beta drivers for your card....

BETA

they promised to fix this with this release....but its not WHQL yet....this will happen in a few weeks
