Hey folks,

well i just made some improvements to my current machine having installed (4) 1gb sticks of ram and installing windows 7 to it. much to my dismay i find a number of troubles with the new os. one of which is that win 7 no longer provides outlook express (which i miss terrably) so after i looked for a week for a sutable replacement for o.e. i found Dreammail (fantastic program.) but as most mail programs they will not breakup large mail files with attachments as outlook express did. current limitations are files exceeding 25mb will not be mailed by Comcast. now this problem was never a problem when i used o.e. because it would automatically breakup files larger than this global limitation imposed by comcast. so i guess i will have to do as many of you do and upload my large files to a file transfer service. now the big question is who provides these kinds of services ???? so i need some suggestions as who may be the best for this application.

i have other issues that i will add to this post at a later time. any help will be appreciated.

thanks,

Katana

if you want i can get you Office 2007 and you can use Outlook. Better than Outlook Express and yes Express died. Why? because most people are moving to a web based email application. I love yahoo mail. No matter where you go and can access the net you can get your mail. Yes you have a 20mb or so limitation but what the fuck are you mailing that is so big? Sure there are better options for that IMO.

but hit me up if you want office and I will put in my dropbox kind of like an Al Gore's famous Lockbox but something real. lol

thanks for the help,

Katana

Not everyone need dorpbox... you can put the files in the public folder like I do and you just send them the web link. The other party does not need to have dropbox installed just the link to the files. Very fucking cool with a 2gb limit for the free account.

All you do is install.. open the dropbox folder... place the files in public. Right click and go down the list to dropbox then click copy public link then past the link in your browser.

Word 2.0 was the shit but it was buggy. They like windows has to change to get people to go buy the new one and they force the other ones out of service by doing so. All marketing.

We can all go get a communist computer "MAC" but that would suck as they suck. lol

Yes MS Office has totbe the best package out there.. I know there are some copy cats.. Ive seen differnet freee office versions of course and for most users they do what they need.. a few letters and a resume now and then what ever works. But when you get down and dirty with the development and programming available in word.. or excel you can see the power in it..

Interesting tidbit.. as i read the autobiography of Steve Jobs. Apple actually commissioned Bill gates to write MS office for the Mac back in the 80's And had an agreement that they would not port it to pc for a number of years. So ms office was not initially for windows.. If anyone really wants to see how steve jobs and bill gates got things gogin and how they interacted back them Read Job's autobiography.. some of it is damn funny.. Like the first time The intitial windows was released and Steve Jobs called pissed at Bill Gates.. as he said you copied my idea.. Gates replied.. Stev its like this i went to steal a TV only you already were there first and stole it.. LOL Steve jobs got the mac OS or GUI interface ideas from Xerox when he had a tour at Xerox park .

I thought Bill Gates bought the OS from Xerox.

but all good history.

Wordperfect was the shit but you had to know the key commands. MS made it so anyone can use a word processor.

OK OK OK... my first word processor was Easy Wright on the Commodore 64. Anyone ever use that? Again another one you had to learn the commands which made it hard as shit when you had no internet to look shit up.

I dont care what any fuck says... computers was way harder to learn back then than it is today. Way harder!

hey again,

i will look in to Dropbox again for that feature as i still have an account with them. on the other hand the winzip courier really looks like it takes your base mail program and lets it operate like outlook express used to work. BTW outlook suspended using the feature that allows it to break up large files you mail after outlook 2003 and later versions. microsoft just can't stand it unless they can fuck up a great program they made. i really wish they kept O.E. with their os.

thanks,

Katana

If you liked Outlook Express, you can always try Windows Essentials which has mail. http://windows.micro...-other-programs This is like the new version of Express that does not have all the bells and whistles as does Outlook.

OMG tell me about it.It took me 2 weeks to write the DOS game NINJA on my old Atari 130ST and another 2 days to save it all to 5 1/4 floppies.

Have you tried Incredimail?

http://www.incredimail.com/english/splash.aspx

Not sure on the size limitations for files and what not but my mom has been using it for years.

YouSendIt is one of the most popular and contemporary file sharing services.

As for email programs, I use Thunderbird, from Mozilla - makers of Firefox. It, too, has an expiration date stamped on it, though. As I understand, one more major update is planned, then the Thunderbird project will be mothballed. They also site the preponderance of web-based email services as the final nail in the coffin of further development. Sad because Thunderbird is a BRILLIANT email client. I've used it for at least the past 7 years or so. Its evolved nicely. That said, and because I have a smartphone, I'm even using my gmail accounts more than ever before. But that's for personal emails. Business emails are another matter entirely.

Hey,

I do not see a need for any local email client, like was mentioned above web based is where it is at. I prefer Gmail.

For the pesky Microsoft attachments google docs is ok, but I have been testing this for my people that need free and legal....seems to work pretty well so far.

Kingsoft Office with AntiVirus. Free is good.

http://www.kingsoftstore.com/download-office

And for file compression amd management I think that Winzip is overrated, I like 7zip.

http://www.7-zip.org/download.html

Windows 7 x64 works well IMHO. Windows 8 is turning people off, but I do like the network enhancements. TechNet subscription got me the RTM a month ago. I like the pause feature on large fdile transfers...and a few other things. I do not like that Microsoft is making Media center a pay product.

There's my nickel!

I didn't know about Kingsoft Office. I'm test driving it now. Thanks for that tip, GMoney.

no prob. It too is not the best, but does a better job with viewing M$ spreadsheets than google docs sheet reader. I have only used it for view/read stuff so far.
