I got a windows update this morning that required a restart and it worked fine then my wife said it was off when she got on it and now it won't restart when I turn it on. I get the screen that shows the Windows logo and the light bar that just keeps sliding but doesn't load. I am on now in safe mode with networking but really have no clue what to look for next. My phone is on all day 425-820-9477 so if you think you might know whats wrong give me a buzz. thanks in advance

My bad...I neglected to mention that he was able to access safe mode with networking and restored to three days earlier which he knew was good...The computer is still hung up...He gets the windows splash page but it acts like it is stuck in a loading loop...This started after a windows auto update today... :) :)

ok I have a stick with some shitty old music I can use correct stcks rewrite everytime you use them. I have no idea where to find a boot program or how to load it to a stick. Is it safe to assume since I am able to access the system in safe mode that it is a OS issue and not a hard drive or hard ware issue? I am running XP pro SP3 so I am assuming I would need to find a PC using the same OS and version??? My cell is 206 229 1451 since I will be at work over the next few days..

Sorry forgot to add this, its the old fashioned way

Control Panel/ Add - Remove Programs/ select the "Show Updates" upper right i think/check box and uninstall the required update which will populate the full list of installed programs. Find the last installed update (by Date) and remove it

try this also just hit start/run and type one of these in to put back the windows file that is missing

Which update was it? Usually when I have problems like this I Google the update and find a solution. What others have suggested are what I would do, uninstalling the update and making sure it never gets downloaded again.

Pman I want to ask you a question as after some research I found out that the extended support for XP Pro was over in 2007 and you said you received some updates yesterday or today? Why would they send you updtaes after the extended support is over and done with? Maybe you need to set your updates to you decide what gets updated and what don't. The following web site is where I found the info for my question!

The update could have been for another program or hardware on his PC. I get updates all the time for Microsoft Office, my keyboard, all kinds of random shit that's unrelated to the operating system.

Yes I have the original disc's and it seems I have some issues other then the OS since I can't run or remove Malwarebytes because of a issue with the dll. Not sure what this means but LOADER said it is not good. Can someone give me a list of the things I need to pull off the old data base and what drivers I will need to update as soon as I reinstall the OS? I need to be reminded of what order I get drivers and when to reboot and such. Done it a few times but not often enough to remember it all. Thanks everyone for the help with this I am always grateful for the tech help.

1st of all run your motherboard disk for those drivers i believe with xp... then run this program to install and update all the rest of your drivers (it finds them and installs them for you) plus defrag and clean up the the pc and registry for you also http://www.pcpitstop...ore/pcmatic.asp excellent program for all windows even Windows 7...sounds like your getting a lot of good advice here!

So as far as I can tell right now I am going to reinstall the windows XP this weekend and when I do it will wipe out everything correct like a almost clean harddrive? what should I save other then pictures and documents and config files anything else? Is it safe to assume if I have any issues loading the windows XP disc's I have a Hard Drive issue as stated earlier? so I install OS everything is good I then install Browser and then drivers for my Mother Board off the web and then restart it and then down load that auto retrever for the remaining drivers and I will have them up to date? Then I am sure I will have to update plug ins like Flash player etc?

If you have the extra money you could take it to the computer repair they can pull all your files on to flash drive, reinstall windows and then put your files back...you can also do this yourself with an external hard drive, just take all the files you want, from C:drive and then put them back after the install (even game files then you can install the game and then drag all the files off external back to the pc and you won't have to dl all the patches) ...they are really cheap now a days, i got a 3 TB external at costco for eighty dollars but 1terabyte hard drives are everywhere for about 40 to 60 dollars and you always have your files handy just in case. But yeah a fresh install will clean it up and yeah i doubt it will load the disk if its the HD...no worries its really easy my grandson 18 changes from windows 7 back to to xp every month lol...hes never happy hehe. but if your getting the loading screen i don't think its a bad HD. Probly when it got the update it left out a windows dll...even if its the HD i would seriously think on the external to. Hope it all goes good for you this weekend!

I deal with Microsoft employees every now and then and I am sure soon one of them will bring me a copy of windows 7 that they can buy for about 50 bucks. Last time I did this the entire info I shipped over to this old pc was done via thumb drive so may not need a external yet but who knows? I will stay in touch and have done this a few times with no back up PC like now so we shall see. I have faith I can muddle thru it slowly
