My experience is that being first in is more often than not wasted money. I have many FPS games I never should have bought. Take some sage advice and wait. Whilst the Origin pre-order prices look horrific, it'd be worth shopping around nearer the release date. I don't see access to the beta as a perk, personally. In past years (BF2,BF2142), you could say DICE listens to its gamers. But with the release of BF3, and an all-out dash to compete with CoD, DICE has become a bit of a sell-out. Instead of sticking to its roots with gaming that isn't pull-out-of-the-box playable (meaning you don't jump ingame and instantly get kills), it has de-evolved the kind of content it produces. Instead of catering to the fans that jumped into the massive battlefield environment of predecessors, it plays to the masses that love run and gun style games that require little thought, little teamwork, and even less effort to enjoy the game. It traded in its underground status for dollar bills. If you're expecting revolutionary advances in gaming technology in the form of flashy and dazzling graphics, you might just get it. But if you're expecting it to separate itself from the likes of CoD and other popularized FPS games and define itself, don't hold your breath. Money talks. And DICE is listening. That said, I do plan on getting BF4. Despite my thoughts on DICE's future, it's still a better game overall. But I won't be fooled into getting my hopes up like I did when BF3 was announced while I was mowing down charlies in the huey on Valparaiso.
