Ok guys and gals,

It's time to start digging through all your old HDD's, I have a old Maxtor Diamondmax 20 160gb IDE hard disk that has taken a dump on me, am getting the old click of death from the heads so am looking to source a similar HDD so i can replace the board and just maybe recover all the files that I was storing on there,

This is quite a big deal for me at the moment because this drive was used to store all the family pictures from when my 3 children were babies up until a few years ago so it's somewhere in the reagion of 12 years worth of family pics that are lost,

I'd be hugely gratefull if anyone like me that just keeps there old HDD's could take a look and see if you have any matching HDD's that you no longer use ??

Details of the drive follow

Model: Maxtor Diamondmax 20

Size: 160gb * PATA

S/N : 5LS5KRDR

STM3160812A

P/N : 9DN032-326

Firmware: 3.AAK

If anyone does have a similar drive they no longer use then i'd be eternally gratefull if you could part with it so I can just maybe get my files back,

*** Crosses Fingers ***

Thanks all :)

P.S. Will add pictures later if needed

Hey thanks Wolftis, but i'm pretty sure it has to be the exact same size/model number for a board swap to work, I've heard of people that have managed to do it successfully with Seagate and Maxtor because there actually the same company but am 100% sure it has to be the same size disk drive because of the head positioner on the board, but thank you all the same :)

Thanks for the offers guys but i'm pretty sure it has to be exactly the same make and model for it to work, the sata controller board is quite a bit different than the IDE one, also the drive size has to be the same or the head positioner will be incorrect, but again, thank you guys for the offers

Yeah same here. Thought I had a 160Gb but it was a 120Gb. That sucks.

Phantom,....try the UDMA tool of WD and see if you can get it on UDMA66 or 100(stock it is 133).

(this tool works with other brands too)

I do not think you ae grasping his meaning....... What he is trying to do is fix the HD he has so as he can get what he has on that drive off....... If he just replaces the HD he can not remove the pics he want to grab.......

Yeah I think he wants to restore that drive by trying to take of the printplate/PCB or other parts to save the pictures and info's

I just think that hardly will work or the serial on the PCB must match. The UDMA tool might can work as the UDMA66 will be slower.

1

Open the computer by unscrewing the access door from the back of the computer. You may have to push a button or a release instead or in addition to this step. Disconnect the hard drive cables and unscrew the drive from the case.

2

Put the hard drive in a water proof plastic bag and freeze the hard drive for several hours if the drive itself is physically failing.

3

Take the drive out of the freezer and connect it to another computer as a secondary drive. Open the other computer and look for additional hard drive connections to connect the drive to. Plug a power cable into the drive. Leave the drive sitting next to the computer on a safe surface away from static electricity.

4

Open Windows Explorer and select the files you want to retrieve. Copy the files onto the other hard drive or CD or flash drive.

5

Install recovery software such as GetDataBack, Recover My Files or RecoveryFIx, if the hard drive is missing your files (see Resources). Run the software and choose the attached hard drive to scan. Select the files you want to be recovered if they are found and copy them to another drive.

6

Shut down the computer. Disconnect the crashed hard drive and close the computer case. If your hard drive is not physically damaged and just the operating system is corrupt, reinstall the drive in the first computer and reformat to use again.

Yes good options. i know that Nurks still have a HDD in the freezer for over 3/4years now hehe

I am just not sure if that will help with the clocking issue(s). Normally you see this alot in the past with WD drives and I never search for a solution. But so yes heard that one before :)

  1. Replace the Drive's Controller Board.

  1. Inspect the drive's controller board carefully to see if it can be

removed without exposing the drive's platters. Most drives will have an

externally-mounted controller board. If not, stop here.

  2. Find a sacrificial drive. It is important to match the exact same model number and stepping.
  3. Remove the controller board of the failing drive.

    • Remove the screws with the correct screwdrivers. Most drives use

torx head which is available at home repair stores. Be careful, the

      screws are soft.

    • Learn everything about how it is connected to the drive. Most drives

are connected via ribbon cables and pin rows. Be gentle. Do not crimp

      or damage the connectors.

  4. Remove the controller board from the working drive. Again, be extremely careful.
  5. Attach the working board to the failing drive.
  6. Connect the drive to your computer or device and test. If it works,

immediately copy your data onto another form of media or a different

hard disk drive. If that didn't work, try to re-assemble the sacrificial

drive with the working controller board. It should still work.

  7. Rub aluminum foil on the four connectors on the bottom of the failed

hard disk near the center. This will take off any corrosion. Be careful

not to damage any of the pins further to the back. Re-assemble the

    failing drive. Try again.

Here is why I said freeze it:

This method surprises many, but it actually does work (depending on what happened to the drive). The idea is that freezing it will constrict loose parts long enough for the drive to work properly. Make sure you have a computer ready to plug the drive into and an external case. Place the hard drive into a baggy, seal it tightly, and put it in the freezer overnight. The next day, remove it from the baggy and put it in the external drive case. Transfer the data from the drive before it warms too much and crashes again.

Thanks again guys,

I didnt want to try the freezing method because even though it could work, there is a posibility that this could introduce moisture to the platters which will totally screw it beyond recovery,

Thanks for the offer grey but am pretty sure that the controller board for SATA and IDE differ quite a lot, for a board swap to work it has to be the exact same model and firmware numbers, i have heard a few people that have managed to do this and get it to work for long enough to recover files from damaged drives so dont really want to try anything else until I can find an exact match for the drive that might screw it beyond recovery,

Ray, thanks for the software links but as far as i'm aware, for any software to work the hdd has to be mounted in the OS and recognizable as a hdd, which it doesnt, it simply clicks when it's powered up which after a lot of research i've figured out is the head controller on the board more often than not, BUT !!! the link to the Seagate 160gb you posted looks very interesting, it's exactly the same appearance on the outside so I think i'll have a bid on that and see what the board looks like when it arrives,

Thanks again to all for the offers, sugestions and advice, lets hope that this seagate one could be a good donor :)
