post a bump here for those in japan. The images are horrifying and the suffering is terrible. I hope like hell that things will be okay for those that remain.

Absolutely horrible, but an even greater catastrophe looms: pressure is building inside that damaged reactor; there could well be a meltdown.

8.9 would be the 5th strongest earthquake in over 100 years. horrible. my dad was supposed to be flying to tokyo, japan this afternoon for buisness, cant help to feel a little bit lucky there. i saw there going to have to release some toxic vapor in the air to stop the nuclear plant from a total meldown, hopefully that doesnt happen and hopefully everyone will be alright out there

Seeing the images and videos on the news, I am sure we all wish  the nation of Japan all the luck in the world , and some other stories coming out of there, 1 train missing, a ship with 100 people missing too, I only fear the death toll will run into thousands as time goes in.

A sad day, our thoughts go out to those in Japan.

You know what Wolf Tis, I agree, things over the last few years seem to be strange, mother nature or no mother nature, I just don't remember things being like this in my teens and 20's, and early 30's, and I don't think it's rose tinted glasses either.

Thinking of those in Japan......Hope ur friend is ok Gorilla.    And Yes there was this stuff before........ :)  It is just more known now because of TV and crews being able to get out and more warning systems.  This stuff has been going on for years.

Tsunamis have been recorded for thousands of years, we only hearing more about things like this now because we can get world news within minutes of these things happening and also when we were younger did we really take a lot of notice about anything but our own lives, if there is any good news connected to this story it is that thank God it happened out at sea and not on the Japanese mainland or we would probably be counting the dead in millions not thousandsCry

God Bless them..reactor leaking now..oh boy..

We had the biggest earthquake ever..Back in 1960 in Valdivia.....it was 9.5 ..The Tsunamy was almost 50 feet high waves..and 620 miles long..

My mother told me she survived by climbing a tree..the roots help to hold the ground together..She recalls people falling into the cracks of the earth ..Horrible sight...More then 2000 dead...

We are now bracing for 1 even bigger..it will be close top 10...Any day now..on the north part of Chile..Cry

Call me a pessimist but I always feel that a significant earthquake like the one in Japan tends to disturb mother nature breeding another quake somewhere else shortly after.

Japan moved 8 ft. during the quake. I just feel if they shifted the earth 8 feet there it may have disturbed the earth somewhere else and that spot, wherever it is, may then shift itself to get more comfortable resulting in more quakes.

Here is the list of the top 15 since 1900:

• Chile , 1960 05 22, 9.5 magnitude

• Prince William Sound, Alaska, 1964 9.2 magnitude

• Northern Sumatra, 2004 9.1 magnitude

• Kamchatka, 1952 9.0 magnitude

• Japan, 2011: 8.9 magnitude

• Chile, 2010 8.8 magnitude

• Ecuador, 1906 8.8 magnitude

• Alaska, 1965 8.7 magnitude

• Northern Sumatra, 2005 8.6 magnitude

• Assam and Tibet, 1950 8.6 magnitude

• Andreanof Islands, Alaska, 1957 8.6 magnitude

• Southern Sumatra, 2007 8.5 magnitude

• Banda Sea, Indonesia, 1938 8.5 magnitude

• Kamchatka, 1923 8.5 magnitude

• Chile and Argentina, 1922 8.5

Japan is having a core melt down as I write this if it's bad enough the fall out from this could reach the us and southern Canada from the jet stream. 1300- 750 rads!. the safe zone for rads 500. there are 6 reactors in trouble.

Don't want to be a kill-joy, but these things are realy no suprise. The wave that hit wasn't realy that big. i think that much of the land that was inadated by water is below sea leavel to begain with. most of the buildings are made of wood and placeing a neculer plant so close to the sea was not a good location. I guess what i am trying to say is , we create our owne deasters because we realy don't see what can happen. i do pray for all thoses lost and suffring.

Nuclear plants need a good supply of water to aid the cooling process, i am sure the Japanese looked into where they were placing these plants, they are probably the most knowledgeable country in the world in dealing with earthquakes but when mother nature gets angry it shows us how insignificant we really areFrown
