The people that have their houses on the coast are in to lose a lot in this storm but as I who lives in Northern New York and who has an old house with rather large trees surrounding it and is in the path of at least 30 mph with gusts of 50 or higher may also not have much of a home left after this is said and done. So I think as the saying goes here Shamu if you have nothing nice to say just shut the hell up. I will keep everyone in my thoughts that are in direct contact with this storm..stay safe:) Sandy's due to arrive at a time just after the 25th anniversary of our own "Great Storm" that hit Northern France and Southern England. 22 lives were lost as a result of that one and around 15 million trees were felled. (We got off very lightly - our garage roof was lifted off and placed down a few inches "off true" but intact!) Unlike Sandy, however, we had no warning! Hopefully the preparatory precautions, evacuations and, from what I can see, effective actions of local elected officials, will save both lives and property. If a person chooses to have a beach front home they also know an element of risk comes with it. They made a calculated decision and when the tide turns against them it is simply the cost of doing business. A risk they chose to accept. Barrier Islands are inherently dangerous and the wise owner makes sure he is well insured. The owners made their choice of their own free will. So if a storm wipes out their house I have very little sympathy. And for residents who do not heed evacuation orders, which might even account for some of the dead I also have little or no sympathy. In fact I have a touch of dislike for them because when they get in trouble our First Responders have to put their lives at risk trying to save them from their own stupidity. Just understand my posts were qualified to target toward people who have made a conscious decision to accept the risk with property location or their own lives, not the general population. But if they do not have insurance and sump pumps well................................... you know what I mean. Boomer and vipersniper 2

Think of this as a nor'easter with the engine of a category 3 hurricane. The models show that the wave and surge threat from this will have the equivalent effect of a category 4 hurricane on the coastline (or a rank of 5.2 on a scale that maxes out at 6). The low pressure at landfall will be 950 millibars (mb )or lower. I lived where the eye of Hurricane Juan slammed Nova Scotia a few years ago, and it's low pressure was 974mb. The lower the pressure, the higher the wind and heavier the rain. The storm surge from this will be huge, and occurring during monthly high-tide. Now for the wind. Unlike a hurricane, the wind-field from this will be enormous geographically, with sustained winds at or near hurricane or tropical storm force. As this is a slow mover, also unlike a hurricane, these winds and larger gusts will be sustained for over 24-36 hours. Trees still have leaves on them, and the ground will be saturated. Many trees will topple, and current models expect over 10 million people to be without power for several days. Anybody who lives in the warning areas and does not take this storm seriously is a moron. Is that why they call you Astronomer,? lol vipersniper 1

Now like Shamu, I feel the same way, you build on the sand and guess what.... well freaking DUH! You look the gift horse in the mouth to many times and sooner or later he's gonna bite you in the arse (face). I'm a Florida Boy Born & Raised and been here most of my life, if you don't heed the warnings then your just STUPID but 75 mph winds.....man I do yard work in that crap :hrhr: :hrhr: And besides if thats all the speed it has, you better worry more about tornados than the freaking hurricane vipersniper 1

But what can you expect from the media. They will make big news out of it just to panic people. At least it is knocking most of the leaves off the trees. One good clean-up and the leaves will be gone. Granted it is just about now making landfall near Cape May, NJ so it can still get much worse.
