Be safe everyone! I'll be watching developments via the news channels and praying you are not adversely affected.

(I have family in northern New York State so have more than a casual interest!)

All current watches and warnings for the Eastern half of the USA. This is one for the record books: Tropical storm watches and blizzard warnings on the same map, and all from the same system.

What scares me is that a lot of people will not take this one seriously. Think of this as a nor'easter with the engine of a category 3 hurricane. The models show that the wave and surge threat from this will have the equivalent effect of a category 4 hurricane on the coastline (or a rank of 5.2 on a scale that maxes out at 6). The low pressure at landfall will be 950 millibars (mb )or lower. I lived where the eye of Hurricane Juan slammed Nova Scotia a few years ago, and it's low pressure was 974mb. The lower the pressure, the higher the wind and heavier the rain. The storm surge from this will be huge, and occurring during monthly high-tide. Now for the wind. Unlike a hurricane, the wind-field from this will be enormous geographically, with sustained winds at or near hurricane or tropical storm force. As this is a slow mover, also unlike a hurricane, these winds and larger gusts will be sustained for over 24-36 hours. Trees still have leaves on them, and the ground will be saturated. Many trees will topple, and current models expect over 10 million people to be without power for several days.

Anybody who lives in the warning areas and does not take this storm seriously is a moron.

Incredible storm surges expected over a huge area. This will be devastating. More evacuations have been announced over the past hour.

Not saying things won't be bad bad as usual the weather news media takes advantage of any exposure they can get. Instead of just reporting the news / facts they have to make a drama event out of it to feed their own egos and get extended face time on TV.

I am north of Philly and expect to lose power and little else. That is no big deal.

As for our illustrious citizens with their beach front homes I won't shed a tear if their house are sucked out into the ocean and wind up in Europe months later. Too many of these homes are built where they have no business being. To top it off anyone with beach front assumes a certain amount of risk going in. When you assume the risk be willing to pay the price.

Actually I am well pleased for the rain, will be welcomed for all the shrubbery and new grass I have planted.

Bring it on Mother Nature, let it rain!

From a meteorological perspective (a hobby/passion of mine), this is an unprecedented storm on so many levels. This one will be source material for 100's if not 1000's of papers and be taught in many courses for decades to come.I'm continuously poring over the raw model data from several models and diving deep into a couple of informative forums and my sense of awe keeps growing. HEre's a great article that puts the significance of this storm into perspective: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/oct/28/hurricane-sandy-powerful-storm-perspective

Yes I think some should take this serious and as for some that don't care if people lose their house and maybe their lives because they built where they did well I don't know about that statement.

As for their lives shame on them if they have not left as all have been advised to do. It's sort of like where their houses are, many knew the risk and possible consequences. It's also the same with their lives, they all have been advised to leave, they know the risk if they made the choice to stay so sympathy is not deserved.

Maybe an XI Stupid Medal might be warranted.

I don't disagree about the news people but this one has already taken 43 lives and has gained strength since then. Shamu seems to me like you have issues with wealthy people and its not only the coast that is going to get hammered by this storm. New York city is shut down the subways are closed.Washington is shut down. My area will be in this from today until late Friday as it is going around us and always on the right side which is the worst I have a generator but only enough fuel to carry me a few days.

Be safe everyone

I don't have issues with wealthy people, in fact I admire them and strive to be one of them myself. Still working on that but of course "rich" is subjective and varies from different points of view.

What I do admit to is being insensitive to others misfortune in, not all, but many cases. Too often people are victims of their own stupidity or fail to protect themselves like uninsured motorists or smokers.

Call it a psychological flaw in my make up but it is very true that I am insensitive to many things that might find sympathy with others.

Understand this is not true in all cases but applies in most instances where some common sense or responsible behavior could have helped them in one way or another.

Going to an opposite extreme I tend to be overly sensitive, to the point of upsetting myself, when I hear of problems relative to children or animals in my own country. They need our protection, adults not as much.
