Ok this is a better palce to make these posts. What do you feel you have to protect yourselves from where you need to have more weapons then most small countries ? Now I do understand the right to bear arms. Its not a position of protection in 2012 it was it 1776. Your worries about losing your guns is so out of place it makes me laugh. Not going to happen. 1 to many guns 2 its a very old amenment to your constitution so don't worry . And do not tell me guns don't kill people people kill people. Ever hear of the brought a gun to a knife fight joke. So lets review this for a second. I'm not against guns I'm against idiots with guns. There suppose to be locked up ammo separate ect ect . So what rights are you going to give up to keep it all the way it is and who is going to give up there rights. Kids have no rights in this matter thats why most of this shit happens in schools with parents weapons . So I'm sorry but if the first thing that goes to your head when you find out 28 people were just shot by a disturbed person is here goes the gun regulation thing all over again you have some problems that need addressing. Every single one of those people had rights to but according to some there rights are not as set in the constitution as the right to bear arms. What the hell does anybody need a machine gun for ? Would it be ok to imprision every parent who leaves a loaded weapon in there house and there kids accedently kills them selves with it ? Its out of control and its a very old law the people are abusing. Get your head out of your ass on this. Take responsibility of your weapons there not toys they kill people. Woops I just shot my son because he was sneaking in the house after I grounded him is not an excuse. GRRRR

I do not think that this thread will be very productive, since most folks have very definite opinions on it. I think it is better served in politics, since the issues governing weapons ownership are most definitely political in nature.

In many areas of the country, peoples' homes are being invaded. The intruders know that you're home and they choose to break in while you're at home to harm you or scare you. It happens all the time here. So, if I don't have a gun here to protect me and my daughter while my husband is at work, how then shall I protect myself? Call the cops? If the gun is locked up with the ammo separated, how much time do I have to retrieve the gun and load it before I'm dead? I'm not a good shot so it brings me some comfort that I can grab another one if I run out of ammo.

Our home has always been armed and will continue to be. Our children were taught about the guns early on. We kept them out of reach when they were very small and unable to comprehend the dangers. They understood that someone creeping into our house in the middle of the night stood a good chance of getting shot. It was probably a great deterrent for them to never sneak out.

I understand that there are cases of children getting hold of their parent's guns and terrible things happen. There's also a hundred other deadly things in a home: electricity, knives, poisons, medicines, etc. There's far more instances of peoples' lives being saved because they were armed. Should we just take everything from everyone because of the actions of some? Regardless of laws, bad people will always do bad things and accidents will always happen. Perhaps we should take cars from everyone.

I see nothing wrong with arming oneself with an many weapons as they choose. Different weapons have different purposes. Some of them are for hunting, some for protection and some are just for fun.

I do wonder if it is the right place or, more to the point, the appropriate time to ask such questions?

They aren't new ones and I have no doubt that the whole USA is feeling very raw at the moment in a time of severe collective grief.

Foreigners like us are unlikely to understand the significance of the "right to bear arms" as our histories are greatly different.

It is most certainly erroneous to judge a society in another land by applying our own perceptions of norms.

As for "gun control", even if there was a great desire to reverse two centuries of unfettered holding of arms, I do think that the genie

is out of the bottle already and the Americans have the sad task of dealing with the continual consequences of their status quo.

I won't move it unless it starts to take a political slant, hopefully it won't.

thankfully here in the COMMONWELTH of ky we are allowed to protect our homes and families against threats, just be sure to drag them INTO the house once youre done shootin

I would love to buy some weed but its illegal in my state so i cant.

oh and again go ahead and make them illegal, lets just watch all the criminals turn in their guns. oh wait thats not going to happen. those laws only keep honest people from protecting themselves from criminals who are breaking the law and also has a gun they are using on you.

I hear you, Dark. After our own school atrocity, it became illegal to hold a handgun (i.e. impossible to license one) but, of course, the surrender of all legally-held handguns and the prohibition did not stop firearm-related crime. Only last week, here in a sleepy little seaside town that doesn't even have any police station, police office or (wait a minute)....police officers on the streets, we suffered an armed robbery!

The difference is that this sort of event is very very rare indeed and, as for firearm-related homicides, they make the national news because there are so few of them. Yes, tighter controls have made some unhappy but, in the UK, gun ownership is all about country life, shooting game or vermin or sports shooting. There's no cultural aspect to it in a wider context. If you don't live out in the sticks, you don't need a gun and there's no argument. Our laws do allow 14 year-olds to possess shotguns, however (so Daddy can teach them the art of shooting pheasants). Oh, it's also illegal to hunt with bow and arrow here...

Here are the global stats for firearm-related deaths. The USA is not near the top but about 36 times higher than the UK's and twice Canada's. The one that surprised me was Switzerland but their defence measures mean many people have an assault rifle under their bed.

I think its better to have a gun and not need it, Than to need a gun and not have it.

Taking guns in this country will never happen, you'll see all out chaos and hear of guns really being used then.

I don't think that is the answer anyway. This worl just has some crazy crazy people in it. How many People have died from a drunk driver? Beer and cars next to on the list. It is very unfortunate what happend ,but this I am afraid is a very ugly place we live. I do agree something has to be done though. :(

its easy to look at the stats from wiki that deejay posted and think that we need more gun control in the US. I personally do think that more gun control is needed. There are places that make it way too easy for people to obtain guns legally. but that is not the only thing that needs to change.

http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2010/crime-in-the-u.s.-2010/offenses-known-to-law-enforcement/expanded/expandhomicidemain

http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2010/crime-in-the-u.s.-2010/tables/10shrtbl03.xls

This is the FBI stats on firearm homicides in the US for 2010. What stands out is that non-whites represent about 30% of the US population in 2010, but are responsible for about 70% of the total homicides in 2010. It is not a stretch to assume many of these murders are gang-related, and guns in those cases tend to be illegally obtained. Not only do there need to be better gun control laws, there also need to be societal changes to address the issues facing minorities.

While this is a very hotly contested issue it is also a very complex one. I suppose the way people feel about it is in large part to how important that guns ie: weapons are to them. I wander if any one of the teachers yesterday wished they had a weapon? What would have ensued had they been armed? Nobody knows and it would all be conjecture at best. This is the reason that this is better to be discussed later when there has been some time to heal and think more about the what ifs. I am sure there are people that had guns that wished they had done things different because something bad happened involving guns, but I an just as equally sure there are others that were against guns that now say if only I would have had a gun. You see there are reasons we all feel like we do and sometimes circumstances can and will change peoples feelings about this issue. I just know I am not giving up my weapons just because (God forbid) they might become illegal!

And........... the ones who are responsible for banning guns (if they do) will likely always be protected by armed guards. Go figure. :realmad:

While I certainly value your opinion, and realize this is a touchy subject for many.. I have already stated that if this thread takes a political slant that it will be moved. Until then, it will remain in the general discussion.

Define "Gun Control" then.

4 teachers were killed because they rushed the psychopath that went to the school bearing arms,,, if they were able to carry weapons themselves they wouldnt have had to shield those poor children with their bodys to protect them,,, they could have ended him before he fired upon the helpless, innocent victims that have never done anything wrong to anyone.Ever notice how all those who are "man enough" to kill are always so cowardly they kill themselves before any one can get a hold of them.Maybe the world is better off ending.

Why is it when people hear gun control, they hear gun ban?

Define "Gun Control" then.

con·trol(kschwa.gifn-tromacr.giflprime.gif)

tr.v. con·trolled, con·trol·ling, con·trols

1.
To exercise authoritative or dominating influence over; direct. See Synonyms at
.

2.
To adjust to a requirement; regulate:
controlled trading on the stock market; controls the flow of water.

3.
To hold in restraint; check:
struggled to control my temper.

4.
To reduce or prevent the spread of:
control insects; controlled the fire by dousing it with water.

Ban

/ban/

Verb

Officially or legally prohibit: "he was banned from driving for a year".

So, control meaning "put reasonable limits in place" i.e. many of the same mandatory requirements for driving a car:

- Title and tag at each point of sale

- Training

- Written test

- Practical test

- Health requirements (particularly mental health)

- liability insurance on each gun

- renewal and inspection at regular intervals

And prohibition on certain weapons i.e Assault rifles (note that it's not called a "Defence" rifle), fully automatic weapons, hollow-point bullets, etc. Only the military and police forces should be able to legally acquire and use these. Make the penalty severe and with a harsh minimum sentence and fine for civilian possession.[/color]
