The United Kingdom will be closed for the entire weekend due to snowfall.

Trains and flights have been cancelled and it looks as if the highways authorities

are doing the usual poor job of keeping the roads open, despite having been

forewarned of this weather front coming in....

Wales has received a "red" warning as a single foot of snow is expected...

We may have to cope with a massive two inches locally.

To use a phrase often uttered by a Canadian friend in-game, "Unbelievable!" :unknw:

That is tragic. We have minimum working temperatures here but no maximum (it is rarely a problem!).

It is currently -1C with a wind chill of around -6C and going colder on Sunday.

I've just heard from a nephew who runs a hotel in the "red zone", on his arrival back in Wales following a motorway drive

from Essex. No problem, he said!

I do firmly believe this hysteria is a generational thing. Because those below our age have seen little in the way of real

winters, they panic when a snowflake flutters down. If they'd lived through winters when the pipes froze and powdery snow

came through the window frames and into the house, they'd see today's non-event as a piece of cake!

You are so right Deejay Even Virgin the company I work for called off all fault calls today at lunch time...I asked my manager to carry on to finish my visits as I did not have any problems getting around, He nearly had an heart attack and told me flatly to go home.

Now I am enjoying being home early I just find it crazy how easily they duck and run for cover...

About 20 years ago I worked for a landscape company in Scotland and in december we had to break the Ice on a frozen lake and wade in to our waist and plant bloody reeds and stuff and the laugh is we did not even think twice we just got on with it lol..

Now if it hits 0 thats it everyone runs for cover this country of ours has gone bloody soft

Sounds a bit like covering ones ar*e, there... Elf 'n' safety and all that!

Having been a manager myself, I have some sympathy with the guy, though.

I used to have people on my team who lived miles away and I wouldn't have wanted them

stranded and unable to get home at the end of their shift.

I think you're right, though, in the concluding assessment!

I've shared my parents' experiences in post-war London during a particularly bad winter

to illustrate true hardship and poverty. They lived in one room with a single gas ring for

cooking/heating and the old man (then a bus driver after being demobbed) got gastric

flu. No sick pay so Mum had to pawn her winter coat to pay the rent else they'd have

been kicked out onto the street. These days, if people haven't got SKY TV and a ready

supply of fags and lager, they reckon they're hard-up!

Sorry if I sound a bit like a certain Monty Python sketch!

Luxury! :hrhr:

The connection kept dropping here, the other day and I was cursing BT...

I found the likely cause at the end of my road - a BT engineer with his head in the big green cabinet covered in fine wires in the pouring rain!

Looked like he was trying to milk a shaggy mountain goat! :hrhr:

Wow that's crazy they shut down the UK for a couple snow flakes.Wonder what they would do if they got 4+ feet of it.lol

We see 2-4+ feet of snow regularly every winter. And the fellas up north in Canada see double that amount.

It helps if you get the same stuff year-in year-out. For the past couple of decades, we've had very mild winters and little snow to speak of.

Some people say it is due to global warming whilst others point to natural fluctuations in temperature. The lack of need for snow ploughs, gritters and rock salt has resulted in the resources allocated to highway authorities being reduced. Somehow, even if they have the drivers on duty, the salt loaded up and a few days warning, they still don't manage to keep the roads open...

We have pitifully weak snowfall here currently. A single sweep of the broom cleared the back step. Sunday could be a different ball game; we are now told that some French weather is due to cross the Channel... French weather is always bad news (the rain/snow does not smell of Chanel No.5 or garlic, by the way). Merde!

I probably should have complained but i am too idle :hrhr: we have 2 PC's running in the house , if my son just switches his internet on the lag spikes on my console hit the top of the box and sometimes playing BF3 forget about it it feels like i am bouncing off an invisible wall, anyway based on what you told me i might hang on until September and see what happens but i am getting really pissed off, i don't see them offering us a rebate when all this crap is going on, Richard needs to get his whip out his reputation as a man who gets things done is going down the pan :sorry: Edited by Sonovabich
