So I decided to partition one of my drives and do a Windows 8 install for testing. I was just curious if anyone has tried this and can get their HLSW and other shortcuts on the desktop to work? I got XFire and a few to work but HLSW and Itunes and a few others wont work from my original C: drive on the other part of the partitioned D: drive.

Any help would be grateful.

Because applications need to be "installed" into Windows, for the ones that are not running just by double-clicking the exe for the app, or by creating a shortcut pointing to the app folder in the previous version of Windows, you most likely will need to actually install that app in Win 8.  This is a limitation of ANY version of Windows, not just 8.

Step 1: Insert Windows 7 ultimate

Step 2: Remove Windows 8

Step 3: Reinstall windows 7 format

Step 4: Keep windows 7 an enjoy

Well them steps are way easier then using Windows 8 at all with all the permission issues and headaches I got from it.

He wants to try out Windows 8 and not to remove it.

Gorilla was wondering about that some programs run without installtion and if some others have to be installed in Win 8 to use them.
Depending on how deep a program "digs" into the system and has nothing to do with user permissions. F.e. Steam
needs Registry entries to work. First you have to install a fresh Steam. After that you can create
a shortcut to your "original" Steam folder and play any game which has been downloaded nefore.

Once used it MAY lead into permission issues when you go back to Win7

I'm using Win XP Pro & Win 7 Pro without such issues. It seems that there are more problems with Windows 8 and some old games like CoD 2 or CoD 4...

If there was a "Don't Like This!" button, I'd click it on every one of you Win8 Trolls' posts.  Get over it, for God's sake.  It's boring as shit to see you blather on about what a piece of crap Win8 is.  Like it or not, it IS the new Windows.  All your pontificating over it's horribleness and advice of "downgrading" to 7 just poisons and obstructs constructive conversation.  Your mother put it kinder, but your dad probably said, "If you don't have anything nice to say, SHUT THE FUCK UP !!"  Yeah I can hear him alright...

Thanks everyone for the input. I have had a chance to play with Win 8 all day and find it very tedious. I will keep it as a partition on my old drive. But I have seen so many things that it is incapable of doing that we are all used to with Win 7, I think I will keep that as my main OS for now.

An no Mot, please don't go bashing everyone here. It was just their feelings on their experience. Same as mine.

djMot

I blather on ALL Microsoft products, not only Windows 8. ;-)

Unfortunately there is now way to avoid them. I use Ubuntu @ work (I had the choice between Windows and Ubuntu) and i am more productive with it than with Windows.

It's highly customizeable and much more secure than Windows. I am using Windows only for gaming and for radio transmissions as there is no applicable alternative to SAM.

So don't bash me :-P

Yes my BIOS supports it. But I wanted to see how many programs that I like and us are stable running on a HDD. Like Technoboy, I too run SAM for our radio station and found that it had problems running. Also, I do not like the fact that I need to do new installs of all my COD games.

Like I said. I have a free copy of Windows 8 Pro so I just thought I'd kill some time while I'm home this week before I head out again.

Yes. There are a may different implementations. The most popupuar are Gnome, KDE and XFCE. All of them are highly customizeable in their behavior. (effects, design etc) and they are much more innovative than Microsoft's Aero. All the things MS put into Aero were implemented much earlier in KDE or Gnome. Shaking Windows to minimize all windows, transparent windows, desktop slideshow as some examples. You can nearly use as much desktops as you want and switch between them (i have six active). Windows needs addons for such features..

And many more..

Valve ported Steam, Half-Life, Counter Strike Source and Team Fortress to linux - well done. There is no difference between the Windows and the Linux Version. I hope other developers will go the same way too. Microsoft also recognized that Linux is is going to be more popular on Desktops - they will bring MS Office to Linux. I think the next version will run with Ubuntu, SuSE etc.

I have to agree, be constructive in the conversation or start another thread about your bitch, why hunt down every win8 conversation and tell everybody to get rid of it, when that is not even the question
