I want to know who uses one and if there are any advantages or disadvantages to using a mouse. Also which brand and model would you recommend for an old dog such as myself?

I use a mouse and not a gamepad. It just seems more comfortable. I use an "oversized" ergonomic mouse, Logitech.

this is similar to mine, but mine doesn't have the adjustable weight, and only 5 buttons, but it's the same overall shape and size.

I use a Panther XL, a converted analog trackball/joystick device that came out in the very early days of FPS. A group of users got together and formed a clan called A3D (assassin3d) - I was one of them. As technology advanced, the clan broke up but the users kept in touch and the clan leader, Steveo, began modifying the device from analog to digital, first by replacing the trackball base with an upside down mouse to make it USB, later by using it in combination with keyboard emulation software, and finally by having a circuit board designed and placed in the device that converts it to full USB with keyboard emulation built in, so that it supports any game, regardless whether that game supports trackball or joystick.

You can buy these directly from Steveo but they're not cheap: around $200. But for guys like me with a touch of arthritis, it keeps us in the game. No way could I play with just a mouse anymore.

Here's what it looks like, and where to get more info on it: http://assassin3d.squarespace.com/

Thanks guys! I really like that Panther Harry but I will have to wait a few months for that tho, but I believe its worth the wait. I like the G500 Logitech I am using now but it and all other mice as easy as they are to use still put strain on my wrist which in turn creates carpal tunnel symptoms caused by arthritis. Until I can afford it I will wait to buy it.

I use the R.A.T. 5 mouse for most games. Only BF3 I like using a game pad, more for flying the planes than anything. I use the Xbox 360 for pc controller.

It depends on the game. Playing a Shooter with a Joystick doesn't work (for me). But it's ideal for racing games, flight simulators or football or basketball games like FIFA 13 or NBA 13

For all other games I prefer a mouse. Played 7 years with the Razer Diamondback, now I bought a new one:

That's the one TecHnOBoY and along with my Logitech G13.I never get sore or cramped.I don't play any better either.LOL The mouse Ratt7 cause I can adjust it to the size of my hand and the G13( a few of us use it in >XI<) cause of the way it's made your hand rests comfortably.I can't play on my keyboard anymore.LOL.I was told long ago that a joystick is not the way to go for a 1st person shooter. It's only good for the type of games you stated.I had a cyborg Joystick before and you tend to move the base and before you know it you are not running in the direction you wanted to go cause you might think you're pushing the handle straight up but if your base moves it's not going to go that way cause your base is crooked .Hard to explain.GOOD LUCK ON YOUR CHOICE.

I do not know how good a joystick would be be do understand you have reasons for considering one.

That said there might be another consideration, some gamers use a trac-ball for their mouse. I never have but perhaps others have experience or know of gamers who use one. not sure if it would suit your needs or not.

hey johnny when i first started using joystick i found that i had the same problem.  now when i get a new joy I  take cutters and cut half the spring off at the base it frees it up and its really smooth after that
