I simply casually continued on my way to check out with a smile of self satisfaction on my face. I sit here chuckling to myself as I type. This will be a story for me to relate to my kids.........they will be proud of me.

A highlight of my day, perhaps on my top ten list of things I have done.

Having raised 3 kids, I have just the opposite opinion on the leash. While I never had to resort to the use of one and even though it may be a joke to you, that woman probably can't go anywhere in public without worrying that her kid will run off. Like it or not, some kids are just like that, and no amount of spanking or screaming will "adjust" the kids attitude. Too many times in public we've all seen parents who let their kids run loose not caring if their behavior is disturbing other people or not. Anybody who has raised kids has lost one for a few moments in a busy place, and it's amazing what kinds of images the mind can conjur up when you don't know where your kid is for even a few seconds.

While it may be a joke to most, that mom at least cares enough for her kid and other people not to let it run around loose. Had you spent a few hours in her shoes, you might figure out that her comments to you were very fitting.

That would be perhaps my one exception to proper parenting. The rest need to go to parents class.

I dont think kids should be on a leash and I dont put my son on one.  now he is only 1.  I dont keep my dog on a leash unless I have too due to laws.  Proper parenting is the key not that I know what that is but I am learning.  and If I can get a dog to stay on my heels then a kid should be easier.  But that is just my $.02

That is essentially my feelings. No I do not want kids running around amok or loose in a store, but again that happens because parents have not done their job. It's the parents fault, not the kids.

I raised 3 rather close in ages. They stayed with us in a store and sat and ate at a restaurant and respected the houses of our friends.  No they were not angels but knew when certain behavior was expected and taught.

I think a leash is just a tool for a parent who has failed miserably in the upbringing of their child. I still feel god about having said something. I know it was not right for me to do so, but damn it felt good. :diablo:

I had two kids of my own and a grandson I raised, none of them ever
acted up in public.... and I mean NEVER.

my grandson was a wild little kid, but he respected me and I never had issues with him that would make me tie him to something.

I don't think you did anything wrong Shamu, she's the one who is truly f up. Maybe she's too chubby to be running after her kids, that would explain the leash...

ok Il just tell you this,my oldest son has alot of issues with his aspbergers and was a hyper and extrmily adventurous and sneaky when young. He would climb over child gates unlock doors and run out of the house  if you didnt watch him 24/7.You would turn around and the kid was gone...Im talking he was 4 yrs old .He had another infant sibling at the time so watching him was a chore and taking care of baby and home...I had to put hook latches ontop of all the doors  and exits ...it was crazy...once he got out and we found him 4 houses down playing with the one box of legos the older couple had in storage in there basemant closet..they herard something and found him .once he wanted to swim in the neighbors pool.they called the police ...once while visiting my mom in another town we were all together in her backyard and the next moment it wa omg where is wes...he went across the street walked thru the house and was in the backyard eating cake and icecream at a kids birthday party he heard....we wree so scared he would wander off someday because he was so curious or got distracted ...so

we were just like that demon of a mother you insulted..YES we put a kids leash on him whene we had to cart up the whole family and go to the mall or public shopping  so he wouldnt dash .ya know it worked  and we may have gotten some looks  and never a shit comment from someone that has no clue btw-but its better then loseing my son in the middle of nowhere and being on the news later that day...so next time perhaps politely mabe just ask why and not just insult someone dealing with an obviously awkward for them situation that you are prejudging

I do apologize for painting with such a broad stroke, but never the less.

I understand the issues you had to deal with, but I see too many parents that are just lazy or as I said before "just don't get it, and I also have seen the results of the lazy parents.
Kids that grow up and you know they had very little chance from the start. When I was raising my kids I was shocked to find out how many parents had their kids on Ritalin...really!!!!
Now some kids need help in this way but this is an epidemic of lazy parenting, not a child issue.

My daughter is 18 now, (thank god) she has aspbergers, never did I have a problem with her running off. Most kids with aspbergers don't like being around other ppl. My problem with her was getting her to go places, just to go never the way she behaved, she was always very polite and well mannered even if she didn't want to be where she was at the time. I always watched her very close tho and not because I knew she had autism but because she was little , hell I still watch her lol. I guess I'm one of the one of those  that is over-protective but  I never even considered a leash for her.  Maybe a leash for some of the adults around her, they acted more immature than she did.

Well..I am sorry , BUT, Bad judgment on your part bud..I am pretty sure if it was the Father..you would NOT ask such dumb question then..As the Father might it had a different approach than the mother..I know I would..

Like LOM said..NOT all kids are perfect..What if this kid had some sort of Illness that makes the mother leash him..Attention Deficit Disorder comes to mind..Maybe even Deaf..Who knows man..Sometimes some things are BEST to keep to your self..

My wife is going to Dallas next week and this is one of the things we talked about..Leashing the kids while she is over site seeing..Or roaming the malls..I am sorry but my KIDS are everything to me and if something would happen to them..She knows best not to come back..We NEVER leash them here as we think our parenting is good enough up to now to trust them..But..Do I trust others out there..Hell No!!!

My point of even responding to the original post had less to do with the leash and more to do with what he said to the mom, and feeling so proud of what he did, even equating it to one of the best things he's ever done in his life. Most of us would never consider leashing our kids, but some parents are left with no choice. Hell she may have been a single mom, who fucking knows. To me this all says less about what the mom did, and speaks volumes about the mentality of a person with the balls to humiliate a young mother in a public place. Sorry Shamu, but regardless of how proud you felt of yourself, that was a pretty fucked up thing to do.

All of us who are parents do the absolute best that we can because there is no owners manual that comes with kids. Doing something like this then bragging about it to friends is about the same as beating up a little kid on the playground then bragging to your buddies about it. Who is the better parent, the one who worries about their childs safety by using a leash, or the one who acts like a bully then brags to their kids about it?
