I can download up to 100 MB/s. With my 7200 RPM Hard Drive I can only achieve speeds up to 50 MB/s. With my SSD I can get 100 MB/s. Download speeds can only be as fast as your hard drive's writing speed. I just thought this was interesting.

Thats not as such true. The main thing is what speeds your NIC card can support. Most default NIC cards are limited at 100mb/s and there is modern ones that can support 1000mbs (gigabit NIC cards)

It is true. Also the fastest internet connection you can get for your home today is 1 GBPS which allows download speeds of 100 MB/s so you don't need a new NIC card to achieve your max speed.

I stand corrected!

 

What you are really saying is that you have a slow ass drive.  Here's the benchmark on my old 2012 laptop's internal:

1 Gbps means 125 MBps notice the small b and big B. That's the theoretical maximum speed of the Ethernet physical layer. In reality when you factor in the OS lag and hardware imperfections you will endn up somewhere around 95 - 110 MBps. A 100 Mbps connection means 12.5 MBps of transfer speed.

 

Your latest PCI E SSDs are capable of doing 2500 MBps in read speed, again that's bytes not bits.

2500 MBps read is 20 Gbps. So essentially your network connection is not fast enough.

The fastest available internet speed right now is actually 2 Gbps. I know a couple of folks that have it... cost $300 a month. Comcast though showed off a 3 Gbps internet speed earlier this year. Also its not the NIC card or the hard drive that actually limit the download speed. Ram use to be part of the issue but with the data transfer rate of ddr4 it is no longer. Even a 7200 rpm hdd can handle around 150 MB/s. NIC can handle around 1000 MB/s nowadays. The hold up now is actually the motherboard itself but event that is going away. The reason you dont see downloads over 50 MB/s is because it is limited on the server side. Companies may have larger bandwidth but there is not a single company in the world that can process 10s of 1000s of downloads at 50 MB/s. Fiber optic technology is going to have to develop alot further than what we have today which is mostly just optic "relay" stations that clean and repeat the signal to extend it.

I dont agree on that RAM argument that makes no sense. A DDR2 PC 8500 can do close too 8 Gbps realistically. RAM speeds matter more when your program data sits in memory and is being sent back and forth between the processor caches.

 

A Game like bf4 keeps a lot of data in RAM which goes back and forth between the GPU and your CPU. Therefore that game performs vastly better on a faster PC.

The ram doesnt just move the data. It stores it and has several address permanently reserved.... Learned this part in my Assembler class... The file itself may only be 1 GB but the actually data that is transferred is a bit larger as it also includes locations of bits and addresses. Windows will automatically adjust the calculation when you see a download bar to show only the data pertaining to the actually file and not the injected data that is used in processing where it goes.

But as I said early the largest part of the slowdown is going to be the motherboard itself and the server which you are downloading from.

We are not discussing computer architecture here or instruction addressing schemes in CPU. I know what are the uses of RAM. I was simplifying the primary function in relation to this thread. Try this switch your HDD to programmable IO in Windows from DMA.

 

Data from lower network layers goes to the upper layers in the ram and then passed to the hard drive via DMA. As I stated earlier even the older DDR2 is still way faster than any hard disk today so the possibility of RAM keeping you from hitting the max speeds is Unlikely. Why are you bringing the mother board in this?

 

The OP suggested he can't get faster writes because his HDD is slow. Your download speeds depend on the server serving the content and your internet pipe.
