Power supply

 Hi peeps. I have a fully modular power supply it is an XFX pro 1050W. It has sadly had a lot of issues, due to corona virus...

You may LAUGH, but at the start of the lock downs, the power company and the water works have been dropping almost daily in some weeks.  Obviously my poor unit has had a breakdown,  and I've had to gently start it like catching a clutch on a car. 

I bought a new one, called a gigabyte P850GM, but i have a cable of 12 slots to fit,  I'm not positive but that's my gpu??? Anyway, this bloody thing only has a 10 slot hole, and every one i look at online has the same.  Please can someone advise me?

Look carefully at connectors some you can take bits off 'I have a cable of 12 slots to fit' your m'bd or the cable connector? So your Motherboard has a 10 slot hole. I think you're mixing up the 20 pin slot with the 24 is it a total of 10 holes? which don't make sense

Gpu will be any of the connectors marked "cpu/pci-e" The motherboard will use BOTH conectors within the marked brackets, the 10pin and the 18 pin which make up the 24 pin connector.

get your self a multimeter to check voltage for cpu , for i fried my motherboard with damb ass cooler master PSU that had the connectors crossed  see pic below Note CPU power comes in 2 flavours  4 or 8 wire, if PSU has only 4  and MB  has 8 ....look closley at 8 for lock tang to line up with 4 wire lock  EPS = CPU power

best get your Motherboard manual out and read it  cover to cover 

look at MB layout for connections 

Tip: use a AVR (automatic voltage regulation) UPS  would of saved your  1050w PSU from brown out or surge

join the arrows to make 24 when done should look like 20 but 24

in your case you want a 20 pin for MB  as pic shows can remove 

if PSU came only 24 would need a olfa knife to cut off last 4 as shown  with yellow wire ...use a vise to hold the 20 and cut closer to the 4 pins to keep socket insulated  and the if exposed wire on 4 part  wrap black electric tape to insulate them from each other or shortting out against case causing a fire. 

you were warned  protect  home, life  by insulating electric connections

news flash   can shove a PCI-e  8 in MB 8 extra power socket  but not other way round i found out the hard way  with cooked MB  curtisy of cooler master PSU marked them wrong

what card you have?   if you are not overclocking you dont need to put   2 cables in your card one will be good   but what card you have an what cables come with it.  

 

does your card have 8+8  6=+6 or  less?

Bazza sounds if have a brand name PC with proprietary parts

any chance a pic of what you want to do  

so we can be on the same page and get this done right

My graphics is 1060 6gig geforce, i think,  but it's moot now,  as i think my motherboard may be fried.  I have a multi meter,  but i have no idea what to do with that so.... i think I'm fooked for a long time

The 10 pin connection on the PS is for a proprietary motherboard main power connection.  MB makers do this so you have to buy "their" stuff.  Dell is bad about this. That being said don't use it unless your MOBO calls for it. For your "12" pin connection on the gpu you will use 2 cables.  They will be the "6+2" cables but just use the 6 part of each cable to connect to the gpu.  The other end having "8" connectors plug in to any of the "CPU/PCI-E" connections of your PS.  Hope this helps.

Knowing what MOBO you are using would help us a lot.

no way in hell MIX  CPU/PCI-E for are not same pinout the polarity are reversed  an kiss good by what you plug it in.....see dia gram  below

 

you can plug PCIe in MB power(ESP-12v) but not  MB power in PCIe won't go

I found by experience, notice the yellow is 12+ 

this why told him to use multimeter to check voltage be fore connecting
