So this kind of thing has happened before and it will happen again. Last few times we took it very seriously and took the appropriate measures but didn't have mass panic over them. Neither by the population nor the leaders. I keep hearing about X number of people infected, and how many dead, but next to nothing about how many have already recovered completely. It's been around 2-3 months. Since there is a 'death rate' there should be a number somewhere. Assuming the rate is %5, and a round number of 5k dead, does that mean the other 95k are all recovered? Oh and stores are now severely limited to what they can order for restock due to mass shortages. And now that the multipacks of water are gone, saw yesterday that they are going after the 12-pack boxes of soda. Panic buying again today. One customer gave me an attitude because she had to wait in the long lines. No shit lady... not that I said that to her. ?1 point

The Pandemic of 1917 is very interesting, unfortunately we really don't know the real numbers on infected vs deaths due to the info blackout in Europe with the WWI conflict still going. Neither side wanted the opponent to know how bad it was. But if you compare the numbers for infected to deaths it is similar to most Virus episodes we have had before . It is said 500 million infected and 20 million dead which makes that 4% of the infected dying. Fortunitely Medical treatment has come a long way since then. Many died of Aspirin Poisoning then! The Pneumonia kills 20 to 30,000 people every year, the only reason why I know this is, is because it nearly killed my 5 year old son in 2005. Pneumonia kills .5% of the infected that are reported. The regular Flu Kills .1% of the infected. The H1N1 in 2009 and 2010 Hospitalized 300,000 people in the USA alone and between 17,800 and 20,000 died from it, depending on the source making that percentage of deaths per infected at .66%. 1,800 of those dead were Children. We do need to take this seriously being this appears to be twice as dangerous as Pneumonia but it would be nice if the Media would stop Freaking People Out.... Nothing Sells Better Than Negativity! Let's All Carry On And Do Our Very Best! We Will Beat THIS!1 point

It doesnt matter what pandemic means. All that matters is what people think it means. And to them its a scary word that means the end of everything. Oh and its not just toilet paper. Its tissue paper. Paper towels. Anything and everything with the word 'anti-bacterial' on it. Various canned goods. Pasta, of all things. Rice. Yes, rice. Wipes. Clorox/bleach. Of course water. Potatoes cleaned out. Including those huge 10 pound bags that most people dont bother with. Large sized bags of cheese. Eggs all gone. The store I work at has been full of panicky people for three days buying shit they dont need. And of course when that happens other people... that arent in a panic... go buy shit they dont need because the panicky people are buying everything. So its a snowball effect. When you see many people with shopping carts filled with multiple 24-packs of bottled water, and its not the Fourth of July, then something is wrong. All of this in a crisis largely of our own making. The only conclusion I can reach is that every year the population is getting stupider and stupider.1 point

Said this before, Steam now have an iron grip on the gaming world, you now don't own anything physical, it's the same reason why lp's are making a comeback, they control your gaming world, let the peasants revolt.1 point

Here's a good way to look at it. My Kids think I'm overreacting by paying a lot of attention to social distancing not touching my face well trying to not touch my face and washing my hands way to much. If my kids get it they might not even know it or they might get sick. Me on the other hand stand a very good chance of dying. I'm over 60 and have what they like to call mitigating issues. I actually have two out of the top four that kill . Not bad but I do have them. So if I get this right now I'll get really sick hit the ICU and hopefully get out. Ta Da I now have some type of immunity to this thing. Trust me I'm not totally against this method. Just wish my odds were a bit better. I get this thing when it hits our city big time. I doubt there will be a bed for me. A respirator no way plus I do not want to take one away from anybody. So life to me is important very important so this is very very serious stuff. Just because it won't do much to you does not mean it won't hurt other people. The worse thing I've heard is it just kills old people. I like old people there funny and like to tell great stories. I do not want to see them die because some people think this is going over board. I like many have lost a lot of money because of this. Because of my age I do not think I will get it back . And that's just fine by me if it helps slow this thing down so the pros can do their thing and keep as many people alive as possible. Lets help out everybody that needs it anyway we can. Maybe it’s me but is it completely bad form to be talking about making money off heels of a pandemic? Please, create a different forum for that talk, it’s nauseating.1 point -

Greetings friends, I would like to start this post by stating that my goal is not to instill panic, but to provide an analysis on this situation which I believe I am qualified to do and to perhaps prompt some of you to take this Covid-19 situation more seriously. I have an undergraduate degree in Biochemistry, a Doctor of Medicine degree and completed my residency training at the Mayo Clinic. I practiced medicine for 10 years. I have co-authored several scientific papers and know how to interpret scientific data. I have spent dozens of hours over the last 6 weeks combing through the available data surrounding this virus outbreak. This is not “just another flu”. The main reason for serious concern is the fact that our medical system is not prepared or equipped to deal with the surge in demand we are likely to see as this situation unfolds. While our government did eventually cut off travel arrivals from China, it was too little too late. Hundreds of thousands of people from China arrived in America before this ban went into effect, many of them likely infected and asymptomatic. Additionally, our CDC and FDA were asleep at the wheel, and in typical government bureaucratic fashion fucked the management of this up due to their desire to maintain total control of the testing procedure. This is now a situation of containment. It’s a numbers game. Yes, if you are under 65 and healthy you are not likely to become seriously ill if infected with Covid-19. However, do you have family, friends or neighbors that are older, or have pre-existing health problems? Are you willing to be so cavalier about this outbreak and be the reason one of these people ends up hospitalized? We do not have the capacity here in America to deal with tens of thousands of people that need an ICU bed. We have about 100k ICU beds here in the USA. At this very moment, approximately 75-80k of those beds are occupied with people sick from all sorts of regular ailments (yes, including some with “regular flu”) Below are some recently updated numbers from Italy and Korea to hopefully wake you “it’s just the flu” bros the fuck up. Italy -Total cases +25% 3089—->3858 -Death Toll +38% 107—->148 -ICU +19% 295—>351 -Hospitalized +33% 1346—->1790 Horrific data points out of Lombardy, Italy 9-10% cases in ICU 10% of doctors and nurses can’t work because they tested positive South Korea -Total cases 5766—>6284 -Death toll 35—>42 Almost all of the data coming out of China has been complete bullshit. Including all of the latest data showing that they have almost no new cases and most people have recovered. At one point in China, 700 million people were locked down and forced to home quarantine. Do you honestly believe they would do that for “just another flu”? Here in America we have been behind the curve and have not been doing the appropriate amount of testing and social distancing needed to slow the spread enough to prevent eventually overwhelming our healthcare system. South Korea has done a much better job with this, and they still are dealing with a rapid increase in cases. If this doesn’t change soon, we are in big trouble here in America. We cannot build a hospital in 10 days like they did in China. We do not have excess ventilators and nursing staff. If you do not take this situation seriously, you are actually becoming part of the problem. I wish all of you the best. I consider all of you my friends, and I hope that none of you ultimately become sick, or have a family member who becomes sick. I’d recommend obvious common sense stuff such as frequent hand washing and using hand sanitizer, but I’d also suggest avoiding crowded situations if they are not necessary. It’s possible that if enough people change their behavior, and all of the large conferences and gatherings are canceled or postponed we can minimize the impact of this on our society. If not, we are going to have a similar situation to China and Italy very soon. It’s entirely possible it’s too late to stop that from occurring. Be prepared for school closures and travel disruptions. Ideally, be prepared to spend a minimum of two weeks (three-four better) without leaving your home. Have enough food, medicine, (alcohol) etc that you could hunker down and avoid contact with others and public places. Chances of needing to do this are not astronomical, but they are also not zero. Peace out and good luck.0 points
