Well after months of deliberating and procrastinating, I finally cracked open the piggy bank and spent a little dough on a new computer. I have been playing on a POS for a long time now and, while it was tweaked out to the extreme, it was still struggling to keep up with the current games, even COD2

Now all I have to do is find time to get the damn thing out of the box and start setting it up. I will post pics once it is running. (If my employer didn't keep sending me out of town I would have this done by now!!!)

I was going to build a computer but in the end I realized I don't have the time so I went the noob way and bought a pre-built unit (and yes, I know building it would probably have been cheaper but like I said, time is also expensive)

Specs

iBuyPower: Core X58 Custom Configured

Intel Core i7 960 Processor

Asetek 550LC Liquid Cooling system

What was the cost? If you don't mind posting it. I'm thinking of getting a new rig also. And same as you, don't have the time to spend building one.

Nice one Nick!

You rig certainly won't be struggling in games now....at least not in any of the first person shooters we're into.

It also should be running BF3 real good if you're tempted to go that route...

Don't forget that there's no monitor. I already had a 27" monitor so I didn't get a new one. That saved me around 250-300

Also no peripherals (gaming mouse, keyboard etc) as I already had those. Every little helps

I have to thank my employer for putting me on the road so much recently. They pay us "per diem" and I have been staying in the crappiest, clean motel I can find. Then putting all the extra money away for my "baby"

Otherwise there is no way in hell I could have afforded this!!!

I think you need the Kick Ass Computer Medal. That is one of the best computers I have read about on here. Great price too. I had more than that into one that was 5 years old and so bad in wouldn't even play Black Ops. And I didn't even add nothing to it.

You really got a sweet machine there.

Nice looking Rig. Did you consider using an SSD drive at all? I've had my rig (second build) for 2 years, looking to do some sort of upgrade, thinking Solid State Drive might be the ticket. Posting a review of the drive I'm considering, its like 10X faster than the Raptor 150 I'm using. Real curious about that.

Sweet setup ya got there. You'll like that 6950 a bunch. Also you can flash that 6950 to a 6970 and its even sweeter. EZ to do and there is a little switch on it from the factory to do it. You can find this method and discussion here....

Well thanks for the Kick Ass Computer medal - woohoo

About the price. I went to www.ibuypower.com and built one. You choose the starting model and simply add and subtract options to get the best for the price you can pay. It even recommends certain options when you choose one that needs a specific matching option. I stumbled on it by accident. I was hunting around and I happened to look at costco.com to see if they were still doing better machines online (why I don't know) and they had this Ibuypower machine so I went to the website and there it was. It's definitely worth a look for lazy asses like me who don't have the time or energy to build one

Yeah I was talking I have probably $2k in just my tower. But it is really overkill. For that price I could have added all the extra goodies that mine has and still not had to put it together.

Here is a list,

Cooler Master HAFx

Corsair 750w PSU

Gigabyte P67-UD5-B3 motherboard

i5-2500k

8G of G-skill RipjawsX 7-7-7-21 RAM

Cogage Arrow CPU cooler

EVGA GTX 470 superclocked x2 in SLI

2TB caviar black (people should really check these things out, they are super fast)

64G Crucial realSSD

and a few other little things

and of course I bought it all right as it was coming out, you could probably find some deals and build it cheaper now.

But having a computer that stays cool at 4.5Ghz is pretty nice. I could add water and hit 5Ghz pretty easy, I've already had it up to 4.8 but it was a little warmer than I like for 24/7 use.

You will love the new rig and they are so easy to overclock and tinker with if you find the urge. Also you can pick up another 6950, flash it to 6970 and run them in Crossfire. My buddies rig is about the same as mine but with 2 of those and it's damn nice. Although he has an awesome, super clean case and really good water cooling and keeps his at 5Ghz all the time. He usually plays RIFT at max settings on his 30" dell monitor! What is it again, 2560x1600 resolution? that's a lot of pixels to fill and he still has no problems. Playing these games on a "normal" size monitor, you won't have any problem for quite a while.

Update

A few people asked on Saturday why I was playing on my old POS again when I now have a "kick-ass" rig to play on.

Well, in short, I went to power the thing up on Saturday morning and................nothing. Figured out the power supply was kaput. Nice, on a computer less than a week old. Anyway, I called Ibuypower and they agreed with my evaluation and gave me an RMA (return material authorization) on the power supply. They gave me two options, one is a standard RMA where I send my PSU back, they look at it, then send a new one back to me, or what they called an "advance" RMA where they send me the new part, then I send my old one back. I opted for #2 (they hold the value of the part on a credit card till they get the old one back and charge it if they don't get it back in a certain amount of time)

I should have my new PSU on Tuesday then hopefully I am back on track

While I am pissed the computer broke, I am happy with the service and support I got from them. I was expecting to have to talk to Pahood in "California" (which it seems is just outside Mumbai, India) and have them tell me I am a moron and please send the whole thing back so they can figure out its the damn power supply, but thank God they are NOT Dell

Well that's good to hear that they have good customer service anyway. Hopefully that takes care of it and you can get back to super gaming!
