An assertion was made, yesterday, in-game that violent crime in the UK was "three times" the rate in Canada.

Appreciating that my single word response of "b*llsh*t" was not educational, I thought it would be helpful to visit the relevant governmental web sites to obtain the statistics for each country. (NB: England & Wales' legal system and policing are separate from other constituent countries'.)

I am not entirely sure that one can compare like-for-like as the counting rules in operation in Canada may vary from those in England & Wales but the raw figures I have collected are:

Canada - population c. 35 million - violent crimes 424,410 (this works out at 1213 offences per 100,000 population)

England & Wales - population 56.1 million (2011 census data) - violent crimes 822,000 (1500 offences per 100,000 population)

Conclusion: The violent crime rate in England & Wales is higher than in Canada but not "three times" higher.

The population density of Canada is 9.8 per square mile.

The population density of the UK is 674 per square mile and of England 1000 per square mile.

Please note that I am posting this as an educational service rather than an invitation for suggestions as to why our respective countries' violent crime rates are comparable or not. I have not embellished the raw statistics with any form of analysis, political or otherwise. I trust these facts will, therefore, remain accessible by all and ask that you do not hijack this for political motives that would cause its removal away from even my sight. Thank you.

Awesome stats. Good to know. Unfortunately, sexual crimes in Alaska top the nation as far as rates per 100,000 go. Ayaq

It's probably because of things like this:

http://warnewsupdates.blogspot.com/2012/12/what-country-has-most-violent-crime.html

That give the UK that perception.

http://warnewsupdate...lent-crime.html

Click through and you will find that:

i) The story is dated July 2009;

ii) The story is published in a tabloid comic masquerading as a newspaper, called "The Mail".

iii) The article states "The figures, compiled by the Tories, are considered the most accurate and up-to-date available."

(The "Tories" are the Conservative Party who were the Opposition at the time that the article was published, 3½ years ago.)

That, my friend, is why my sources are the relevant governments. ;)

Wow really? Deejaykeg starts a new subject to correct some bullshit statistic thrown out in a conversation and you throw out yet another bullshit statistic that has absolutely nothing to do with this subject he is discussing?

1. Alaska isn't part of Canada

2. Alaska doesn't top any nation or US state for sexual crimes.

In-fact the registered sex offenders per 100,000 in Alaska is much less than most US states.

Yeah that was my point, except I was too lazy to expound on it. We have poor media sources that give us false or even hyperbolic information, and that gets spread word-of-mouth or whatever until someone somewhere tells a guy who isn't too lazy to look it up that the UK has "three times" the violent crime as Canada. ;)

I do think those stats (the last link I posted, which has stats compiled from a UN data source for 2010-11) are interesting to look at.

From a variety of sources, all of which are not current (some of which are seven years out-of-date) and put together by

a private unofficial body. Does looking at historical data inform us today if we are not seeking to analyse a trend?

There's a little catch here that goverments use to make them selves look good. And that is what is a violent crime. Same as the unemployment rate in Canada does not include people on welfare or those that lost there UI benifets because time ran out. And so it goes on.

Yeah, I am not going to go through all of the most current data collected by the UN (which looks like 2010 data to me) but if I will post this bit:

Assaults

United States - 250.9 / 100000 citizens

Canada - 161 / 100000 citizens

United Kingdom (England and Wales) - 664.4

Sexual Assaults

No data for United States in their Excel Spreadsheet

Canada - 10.6 / 100000 (2010), 8 / 100000 (2009)

United Kingdom (England and Wales) - no data for 2010. 2009 number: 31.8 / 100000

Robbery

United States - 115.3 / 100000

Canada - 89.4 / 100000

UK (E&W) - 137.9 / 100000

Kidnapping

No data for U.S.

Canada - 12.7 / 100000

UK (E&W) - 3.1 / 100000

Homicide

U.S. - 4.8 / 100000

Canada - 1.6 / 100000

UK (only data in the spreadsheet is for all of GB and N. Ireland) - 1.2 / 100000

That's from the most recent published dataset from the UN Office of Drugs and Crime (http://www.unodc.org/unodc/en/data-and-analysis/statistics/crime.html).

I think you could parse those stats to get to a 3:1 violent crime ratio between the UK and Canada if you look at assaults (sexual or otherwise), and robbery. The other two major violent crime categories are negligible (homicides and kidnappings, although you could always retort that canada has 4 times as many kidnappings as the UK).

Assault ratio: 4.12 times more assaults in England in 2010 than in Canada

Sexual assault ratio: 3.8 times more sexual assaults in England in 2010 than in Canada

Robbery ratio: 1.54 times more robbery in England in 2010 than in Canada

And by the way, I am not disputing your original data, or your original conclusion that an accusation that the violent crime rate in the UK is 3x that of Canada was bullshit. I am just suggesting that it is not incomprehensible that someone would THINK that, given historical data and media reporting on such data.

I'm sorry you're unable to distinguish between a "rant" and reasoned explanation, backed up with cited sources.

However, one must be prepared for some reaction if one asserts something derogatory about another's country or society.

It was reasonable, in my view, to post the facts in a public forum as the assertion was made in public.

I shall always challenge obvious misinformation and exaggeration when it is presented as fact. End of.

Sorry Deejay, you must not have gotten the memo.

On XI it is perfectly acceptable behavior for members to criticize another member’s country or society without fear of criticism for doing so. Those who take offense at derogatory comments made by other members must learn to suck it up and take it, and refrain from making a retaliatory comment about the offender’s country for fear of offending them.

Welcome to the new world order.

No need for anyone to lose thier goose over this. Dee was just clarifying information someone mentioned in game. This is not an atttack on any particular nation, but just information that we can all find ourselves.

Footnote... Each country calculates violent crime rates in diffrent ways so making these comparisons are difficult at best.

Agreement here. Think he was pointing out the flaw in reporting it the way it was. End of. Oh well.
