Privacy is the default. Nobody has to explain or justify why they want it.

But equally so.. one should not assume privacy when they give out their data..

That is where 'reasonable' expectation of privacy comes in. It also depends on whether or not companies bury in their ToS legalese you giving up privacy rights to things they have no need for. Even so that data is private between you and that company and there are limitations on what they can do with it. Depending on their privacy policy which is why those are always important. So the question is, can companies require you to give up personal information they have no need for to use their services.

A South Park episode took this to the extreme. I think it was called human centipad. The Apple iTunes ToS buried a clause that stated you agreed to allow them to perform medical experiments on you. Steve Jobs, may he RIP, said according to the law they agreed to it when they clicked 'yes'. The moral of the story was, as Stan would say, should companies have the power to require you giving up your rights to privacy cart blanche? Or should they, if they want to do business, be forbidden to do such things unless it was strictly necessary?

Here's an example of your privacy, no matter which OS, Browser, AV or hardware used. Just by simply typing/entering a "keyword" such as: "Explosive" Everyone here is now on a "list" at the NSA Idiots file.

p.s. Most assuredly to the NSA PRANK CALL!!! PRANK CALL! PRANK CALL!!

Yup in other places, like China, its 'freedom'. So privacy discussions should be thought of from the point of view where people live. Before the NSA people in America didnt have to worry about it. Now yea if you use certain words you are flagged. Which pretty much means everybody on the internet. And remember they did this without us knowing about it and dubious legal authority, if any. And we all know how history repeats itself. Any particular make/model of a "rifle" is probably another. So if you are looking to buy and ask around or send emails to known sellers you go into a database. I wonder of gun owners are ok with that. Just for looking.

Thanks to Snowden I feel much better about the NSA... well since that guy who is running this country came into power as well.
