Well, thanks to massive, multiple power surges and an outage, I have three fried computers. I won't be playing COD anytime soon. Been working through the issues and going to order a new power supply soon ... but it doesn't look good. Working off of an old laptop for now.

Do you not employ quality surge protectors?

It cost me a chunk of change but I use APC AVR Smart UPS on all my machines. My 2 main PC's each have a 1500watt UPS, My TV and it's PC have one(1200 watt). My NAS has one(900 watt), My Modem and Router have one(650 watt). I even have one on my 3D printer and it's Raspberry pi(900 watt). The first time you get hit with that on off on off on off outage they have PAID FOR THEMSELVES. I game with confidence through storms and have ample time to shut things down in case of power outages longer than 45 minutes.  It Storms here often and in the summer heat we occasionally get overloads during peak usage which triggers the on off events same as lightning strikes causing local grid switching.

If you own expensive electronic equipment ( i.e. your gaming PC) with no uninterruptable power backup, you risk losing it. Surge suppressor outlets are only good for one surge event, they are a one and done and no way to tell if it's been triggered false sense of security.

Here in germany, meanwhile it's duty, to install an over- and undervoltage protection in the house electricity with special components.

And you can buy special multiple socket with a protection build in it. There are four categories: I up to 1,5 V, II up to 2.5 kV, III up to 4 kV and IV up to 6 kV.

And for lightning protection there are three categories and several components which you can retrofit. Some examples below.

note back-ups not do voltage regulation

on the spinning HDD the voltage dips and peaks will corrupt DATA

for total protection get AVR type of UPS

like Johnny  says  one time your toasted and will not know when was tripped,  avoid surge protectors

most units will support 10-20mins on battery

also depends on your load, me i parrelle the batt's up and double the run time (80 mins)

U are right but as I don't live in the "pampa" but in Paris area, there are no lost of power requiring an AVR (and I don't run a server, it's only for my PC and monitor). The protection against surge suffices. It is the case anywhere else in urban areas, I suppose.

I'll second that.  I was luckily enough to get my hands on three apc ups's free with good battery life and without it I think I would of had fried hardware by now too.

Charging up the headset for later!

Replaced PSU, reset the BIOS (pulled the battery and RAM, then held in power button for 30 seconds), hooked up basics to PC (monitor, keyboard and mouse), booted up, then manually reset BIOS. Shutdown, plug in remaining "accessories", restart and ... BOOM!

The pain in the ass was waiting for the replacement PSU to arrive in the mail.

I've been in IT for over 20 years and 11 of that was for an ISP. Buy all the backup and surge protection you want. Against a small power surge it can help. NOTHING on the market I've seen  will stop a good lightning strike. Unplugging power and ethernet connections are your best protection. If you have a cable modem unplug your coax as well. Electricity tends to travel down that copper quite well. Usually if it comes over coax your modem, router and sometimes copper connected devices are done.
