you need the mod tools  download both then copy them into your game directory of Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare

In your Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\bin  Directory is your Map Editor CoD4Radiant.exe

in your Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\map_source  is where the maps your working on are at  backlot and blackout are in there open them and get familiar with editor  any map you create make sure it has a new unique name

in your Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\bin\CoD4CompileTools is your compile tool CoD4CompileTools.exe

Heres a tutorial for you he has 6 parts look in his account for rest

If you are going to do a mostly terrain map, then definitely i'd check out BlackJakcJonnyy videos as @Markoff mentioned above.  He has an amazing set of vids for doing terrain.

Keep In mind the models you will need to make the map. I know of no catus model's sorry. There are wagons mining type model's çritters and shacks galore though.

unzip both in the cod4 directory

CD Version The default location is C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare

For Steam users, this directory is: C:\steam\steamapps\common\call of duty 4\

I do not have cod4 on steam. But you might want to see if steam has the tools. Select your game and see below.

Your craptop will struggle once you start adding a lot of objects into a map - specifically once you get to putting in models (foliage, etc.) and want to use different views to move around the map, probably.  And then of course when you compile the map is where your CPU will get hammered if I recall correctly.  I would recommend building a box with spawn points first just to see how your computer handles compiling everything.

Yep your first map should be a simple test map. Its also a great place to test out ides before you place them in your real map.

Is it better when making rooms to make each wall or "brush" separately?..And is it easier on the program to start making the make as a single player and then converting itt o multi player afterwards?

UPDATE:Just finished a test room with 4 lightings 1 player start lighting is supposed to be white but came out red..however the compiling and reflection went ok for single player..tested room and seems good other then red lighting..

make the map as a mp  for multiplayer so mp_mycoolroom   lower case

for a building you can make 1 wall at a time but you can also make a sqaure make sure its highlited then click on image.png.9aeab25f68a5a6bccbf8dfaf5571e8c2.png  to hollow it out which gives you all the walls just make sure to align each brush

the red look is bacause you did not cover the playing area with a lightgrid brush which you can find in the texture tools area  Textures/usage/tools image.png.0835caf560e617ba2b56455ac9bf3573.png

I addition to what loco said, light grid volume should encompass the entire playable area only ie height and width. It's ok to have say tall structures and foliage outside of the light grid if it's not a playable area. The light grid takes up memory resources of the map so you want to keep it to playable areas so depending on what a map looks like, can use multiple light grids of various sizes to surround the playable areas.
